Situated at the eastern side of the main city center of Oakland, Lake Merritt is a large tidal creek. The tidal lagoon is encapsulated with parklands and lofty neighborhoods. It has been given a rank of being a regional landmark of California and a historic landmark of the United States. The reason this creek has been allotted immense importance is that it has a historical status of being labeled as the approved first wildlife refuge in 1870.

The visitors will get awestruck by speculating the primary features of the lake. The lake has grass shores and artificial islands that are dedicated to being a safe haven for birds. Moreover, there is also a cooperative center named as Rotary Nature center where the tourists can rent sailboats, canoe, and rowboats for a trip around the beautiful lake and get mesmerized with the scenic beauty provided by the creek and the cool breeze soothes their faces.

An active jog in the wee morning hours around the jogging area of the lake will help to pump productivity in yourself that will last till the end of the day.

The most majestic and beautiful aspect of Lake Merritt is that there is a circle of multicolored pearly lights around it. These lights illuminate vibrantly at the yearly gay pride celebration. The vibrate illumination is made from 126 lamp posts and 3,400 lustrous, gleaming small bulbs. This circlet was first lit in 1925. However, following the events of the Second World War, this illuminating circlet of lights was ordered to be removed from the lake area so that the conditions of blackout could be fostered. Once the war was over, and after the ten years of campaign and rallies by the Lake Merritt Breakfast Club, the lights were placed again and resumed their function of brightening the lake and elucidating its calm waters in the late evening hours.
