Situated in line with the Oakland Street and 10 and 11 street in Oakland, the museum focuses on multiple branches of knowledge such as art, history and natural science of California. Inaugurated in 1969, this museum is, in reality, a fusion of three separate museums that came in to being in the initial years of the 20th century. This museum displays almost 2 million artifacts that reflect the extraordinary history of California.

The tourists while taking the tour of the museum will realize that the building architecture is reflective of the mid-20th-century modernism. The inside of the concrete building of the museum has three rows that are each dedicated to the displays of art, history and natural science artifacts. Moreover, there is also an auditorium, a restaurant and exhibition galleries that are arranged only for certain events.

The outdoor design of the museum consists of a koi pond, sculpture area, tiered roof gardens, vast lawn area, and a courtyard.

The tour guides who will escort the tourists in their visit to the museum will tell them that from the period of 2009 to 2013, the museum underwent series of renovations. All the three galleries were closed so that the museum can be expanded, renovated and re-branded. So, the credit of the current exceptional architectural design of the museum goes to the four years of refurbishment and the millions of dollars invested in it.

Let us now have a look at the collections of the museum:

The art gallery upholds up to 70,000 of signature arts and crafts of California. Along with the collection of paintings of renowned California artists, the museum also showcases personal records of an American documentary photographer and photojournalist of the Depression era, Dorothea Lange. Other photographic images of prominent photographers of California are also preserved for inspiration.

Moreover, at the art gallery, the tourist will also see the beautiful artworks of a renowned American Tonalist and Painter, Andrew Mathews and his better half Lucia. The couple was the pioneers of the American Arts and crafts Movement. They tourists by speculation their awe-inspiring creativity will realize their significant contribution in the evolution of Californian art from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.

The gallery which is dedicated to preserving the history of California before the arrival of Europeans at the start of the 21st century upholds 1.8 million displays of historical relics. The collections include photographic images of past, the records of prominent events such as the Second World War, relics of the Gold Rush era and objects related to technology, business, agriculture, and daily lives.
