Nicknamed as SoBe, the South Beach is situated in the exact middle of the Biscayne Beach and the Atlantic Ocean on the eastern end of the Miami Beach. The beach area embraces all of the coastal landforms that are the result of a lumpy accumulation of sands due to tidal waves of the Indian Creek.

Due to the joint development efforts of Lummus brothers, Carl Fisher and John Collins, the South Beach is the first area that was established in the 1910s. Among these three developers, John Collins was also the main driving force behind the construction of the Collin Bridge that connected the main city center of Miami with the surrounding beaches.

Over the years, the area of the South Beach has faced a lot of natural and manmade changes in its original infrastructure. The artificial alterations were due to the outcome of economic upsurge and exacerbated tourism. The natural disaster in the form of the 1926 hurricane, on the other hand, destroyed much of the area of the South Beach.

The statistical data shows that by the time of 2010, around 39,000 people were residing in the South Beach area.

Let us now take a brief overview on how the South Beach evolved over the time.

The tourists visiting the beach for the first time will be astounded to know that initially, South Beach was farmland because, in 1870, the Lum brothers purchased the 165 acres of an island for coconut farming. On the same island, they also constructed the first beach house in 1886. As the brothers left the island in 1894, the control of the coconut plantation went under the hands of John Collins. Seeing that the island has a plentiful supply of fresh waters, he decided to let the natural plantation of coconut to continue. However, from the 1900s onwards the influential businessmen in Miami decided to change the oceanfront by giving the place a more urban setting. Therefore with the consolidated development efforts of Lummus Brothers, Collins and Fisher, the area became more commercial and attracted tourists and millionaires to buy property on the oceanfront. Many of the inspiring millionaires such as J.C Penney, Albert Champion, and Harvey Firestone constructed their estates and residences on the beach. The South Beach is also gained immense significance when the 29th President of United States Warren Harding stayed at the Flamingo hotel in the South Beach area.

At present, the South Beach area is considered as one of the wealthiest and commercial areas of the Miami city, Florida. In this respect, the vision Carl Fisher had of developing the South Beach area in such a way that it becomes a prosperous self-dependent city of Miami becomes true.
