The Monument to the Fatherland in Merida is one of the famous tourist destinations. It is also known as Paseo de Montejo and has been named after the Spanish conquistador, Francisco de Montejo who founded this city in the year 1542. The design of the building is inspired by the French Boulevard. This monument is covered by trees and multiple roundabouts in its course. A lot of mansions have been built along the avenue by the inhabitants of the 19th century. The monument extends towards north from the city center and extends into the highway 231 towards the south of Mayan Museum. Its length is 6 km and is the longest avenues in the city.

The growth of the henequen industry brought economic prosperity to Yucatan in the 19th century. This led to an increase in the development of multiple civil residential projects. Hence the construction of the Monument to the Fatherland started in January 1945 with the support of the residents of Merida. This monument is 14 meters high and has been designed by the sculptor Rómulo Rozo. Its inauguration was done on 15th April 1956. The entire structure is built with quarry stone and symbolizes the Mexican history. This monument has a central semicircle with a staircase, two ramps, and a fountain. The external diameter of the structure is about 40 meters. The water mirror in the lower concave part imitates the lake of Texcoco and the carvings showcase the events that led to the rise of the national emblem. In the façade, the monument showcases the shields of all the 31 states of the federal district and the Republic.

The Monument to the Fatherland is located 2 km to the north of Plaza Grande. You can take a carriage ride or horse ride from the plaza to reach the monument. You can also walk from the Paseo de Montejo to reach the monument while viewing multiple historic buildings along the pathway. The monument is located on a roundabout, hence make sure that you cross the road carefully. There is no admission fee to enter this monument. Taking a walk is the best option to explore this historically rich city, Merida. If you are a history enthusiast, then you must visit this monument as it will be a great learning opportunity for yourself. Do plan a visit to this historical city.
