Spectating the Amgen Tour of California - Morgan Hill Time Trial

in #amgentourofca6 years ago

I road down from South San Jose to Morgan Hill this morning with a co-worker to spectate the Amgen Tour of California which is a 7 day race. The Morgan Hill is day 4 which is their Time Trial stage. Shot below is a screen shot of their website:

On the ride down, I tried to keep up with him but I was dropped. We eventually met up at the start/finish line of the AToC.

This is the finish line before the race

The ride was 17 miles and 800 feet of climbing, not long by road bike standards but when you push it without stopping, it is a rather hard ride.

GPS data is from a Garmin Vivoactive HR and uploaded to Strava

They had a few big screens around the lifestyle festival which showed the race and commentary.

In the exhibit area, Sram was displaying their wireless electronic shifting. My friend is holding road bike handlebars and there is a front and rear derailleur tie wrapped on to see how it shifts. Pretty cool technology, but $$$

They have motorcycles following the riders with spare wheels/tires ready to be swapped out. (Moto not shown)

Here is one of the support cars hold quite a few bikes

This is around the corner from the start, the riders buzz by quite quickly. The winners average speed for 21.6 miles was over 31 mile per hour. (Isn't that fast under your own power?)

This is the finish straightaway down a shoot. Again, the riders are going about 30 mph through here, quite fast for a bike.

Keep up the good work and original content, everyone appreciates it!

Excellent action shots considering you use a phone camera.

I once managed 40 kmph for 10 km with a tailwind and two other friends, as we took turns pulling at the front! 50kmph for extended periods of time is crazy.

Did you ever race pro-am earlier?

Yeah, they are doing an excess of 50 kmph for 21.6 miles and it was not flat. There was like 500 feet of climbing which doesn't sound like much, but when you are pushing near 100%, it is a lot. The winners time was 40 minutes, 47".
There were riders on the course pre-race, but I did not participate. Riding down there and back was enough for me. 20 mph average is good enough for me...

20 mph is fast.

No no. I meant did you ever race earlier, not at this event. Your fitness levels are too good. The only people i have seen with your fitness level in the masters category are former racers. Not leisure riders

Thanks for the complement, but I have never raced bikes or running. A few years ago, I decided to improve my fitness to I can cycle around Lake Tahoe, CA which is at 6,200 feet elevation. (One of the highest alpine lakes in the world) Cycling around it is 72 miles and 4k elevation which is not easy.

So my fitness level is OK for my age. I also like to smash segment times by known age group racers on strava. (Getting beaten by a non racer is a little humiliating IMO)

Haha. I like how you chose the word 'smash' and not 'beat' segment times :D

Something like Phil Gaimon, retired pro-racer now, Strava KOM chaser!

Indeed a great experience for spectators and one of the greatest experience for participants....Awesome work bro...

its interesting ride, you are doing nice and healthy activity. keep on going. Thanks for sharing such a healthy activity

it's very complicated ride.
