Australian Pelicans!

DSC_3601.jpg

This weekend @krystalfinnigan and I went down to The Entrance on the central coast of New South Whales. It was an overcast day with a storm brewing off shore but we managed to enjoy our time walking around the lakes entrance and I captured this close up low angle shot of some local pelicans!

I was using my Nikon D3400 with the kit lens set to 28mm. The camera would have been no more than an arms length from the birds but they didn't even seem to care. After years of people walking along the esplanade they are hard to frighten especially when in numbers.

The Australian pelican uses its large mouth to scoop up fish from the water, swallowing them whole! Their bills are between 40-50cms long. They have black and white feathers however they do have yellow and blue highlights around their eyes, on parts of their bills and some of their chest feathers as you can see in the photos.

Hope you enjoyed the photo and if you ever visit Australia I'm sure you'll see one of these guys getting around the coast!

Thank you photocircle!

Big proud birds:) The angle especially adds some respect nice photo @harrynewman

Thanks Belvins! They are pretty calm around people so I just got my camera low and shot a few pics up at them. I’m happy with the result glad you liked it too :)

The result is quite stunning:)

@harrynewman risking life and limb to bring us action photography of the most engaging type. You’re a brave man getting that close to so many pelicans. I once saw them tear a man limb from limb with those beaks! You’re a brave man.

That one on the left look like he’s poised to strike my man. I’m Glad you survived the ordeal. 😊

Seriously though...Great photo. The storm in the background and all. Did you stay to capture the storm?

It was a close one nearly lost a lens to a snapping beak haha.

But no we didn’t stay for the storm, it was building off shore and didn’t even throw lighting or hit land. I’m definitely interested in catching an off shore lighting storm some time though. Glad you liked the shots 😁

Your better half takes good pics too bro. I’m jealous. Every picture my wife takes is out of focus. 🤣

She definitely has a great eye for capturing a moment... might have to take your wife to spec savers 😅😂

Haha! Yes, the problem is she already wears glasses and got them from, you guessed it, bloody Specsavers. She must have got the factory rejects!

Those birds are just awesome. Just look at the size of that beak. There is lot's of room for some big fish in it.

There certainly is! I’ve seen then eat big fish whole, I don’t know how they manage to get them down their throat.

Thanks for stopping by glad you like the post :)

I love Pelicans. I think they look so funny. A great photo. I think you have captured her essence super.

They do look funny, and they can bend their head and necks into the weirdest angels!

Great angle to catch the pelicans and I like the stormy sky background.
