"BEAUTIFUL PEACOCK."

This is my entry for Daily Photography Contest: Theme: Animal Photography, curated and sponsored by @juliank and @photocontests.

Peacocks are native to India and South West Asia and are the national bird of India. These blue ones are called Indian Peafowl and this beautiful peacock is a male. They are characterized by their striking blue and green feathers.

The feathers which feature on their train (tail) are fan shaped with colourful eyespots in the centre of them. The stiff tail feathers are raised in a large fan during courting and despite the size of these covert feathers, peacocks are capable of flying. The long train feathers which include the tarsal spurs take two years to grow. Fully developed trains are formed within four years.

The Indian Peafowl enjoys open forest or cultivated land areas where they are able to forage for berries and grains, and where they can prey on snakes, lizards and small rodents. When alarmed, peacocks produce loud calls which neighbouring birds respond to in a relay like series of calls. Peacocks call loudly during breeding season also.

The metallic blue feathers on the crown of the male peacocks head are short and curled and the fan-shaped crest on their heads and white shape around their eyes is very distinctive and the train section of their tails contain over 200 feathers.

The Indian Peafowl is found across the subcontinent of India and also in the lowland areas of Sri Lanka. They are protected by religious practices in many parts of northern India and are often found foraging around the villages and towns for scraps.

Australia is one of the many countries around the world that these peacocks have been introduced to. The vibrant colours of the feathers are not the result of green or blue pigments but from the micro-structure of the feathers which result in this optical phenomena.

Thank you @joelle I really appreciate your visit and comments.

Did you know the Greek myth of how the Peacock got the eyes in its tail?
(Upvoted btw)
Hera was the wife of Zeus, the king of the Greek Gods, and therefore she was the queen of the gods.
Argus was Hera's servant. He was a primordial giant whose epithet, "Panoptes", "all-seeing", led to his being described with multiple, often one hundred, eyes.
She charged him to "Tether this cow safely to an olive-tree at Nemea". Hera knew that the heifer was in reality Io, one of the many nymphs Zeus was coupling with to establish a new order.
To free Io, Zeus had Argus slain by Hermes. The messenger of the Olympian gods, disguised as a shepherd, first put all of Argus' eyes asleep with spoken charms, then slew him by hitting him with a stone, the first stain of bloodshed among the new generation of gods.[8]

The sacrifice of Argus liberated Io and allowed her to wander the earth, although tormented by a gadfly sent by Hera.

To commemorate her faithful watchman, Hera had the hundred eyes of Argus preserved forever, in a peacock's tail.

Thanks very much @yourluckyphotos That’s great to hear. 🌺

The love the back view that you captured!! And the close up of the face, why is that one a little different do you know? It has a lot of white!

Thank you @jayclar The peacock I included at the end is definitely a different one than the others. I included him because of the detail.

Yeah... he almost looks like he is part albino, half white variety or something.
It's an interesting one! : )

True @jayclar......especially when you compare him to the other peacock. Both very beautiful birds.

Yeah that's right... I showed him to my husband too, he thought maybe he had a bit of albino going on. He's certainly a unique bird!! : )

That’s interesting @jayclar I didn’t know albino peacocks existed. The things you learn in Steemit. 👩‍🎓😊

I went to find an albino peacock... so here is a photo of one of them first...|

But then I found peacocks like the one you photographed!! It's part albino! How special... these I did not know about! The things you learn indeed : ) I'm glad I went looking!!
