My Walk Past Les Halles [A Tribute to Anthony Bourdain]

Remembering Bourdain at Les Halles

Anthony Bourdain was the Executive Chef at Les Halles, a French brasserie that later became the fuel for his award-winning book; Kitchen Confidential. This place was a staple of Park Avenue (New York City) for years until it shut down last summer. This week the taped-up front door became a memorial to Bourdain, who took his own life on June 8th.

Earlier today I walked by Les Halles to read about and remember him. The show "Parts Unknown" was a favorite of mine and Bourdain's approach to storytelling will never be found anywhere else. He had the ability to ask basic questions about food but always got really complicated answers in return. People trusted him and spoke their minds around him. Over the course of a meal - he would tackle politics, history, love, hate, and culture.

The front doors of Les Halles were covered with flowers, messages, pictures, wine corks and bottles of beer. During the short time I was there, everyone stood quietly reading notes. It was a rare moment in a very, very busy part of Manhattan.

Still, New York always has ways of breaking up a quiet moment. Just a few minutes after I got there - a homeless guy walked over to the group, interrupted (somewhat politely) to say "God Bless you all, I'm sorry for your loss, look on the bright side, don't be sad, feel better."... It was a weird moment, and I'd like to think that Bourdain would have wanted that kind of thing recorded.

"Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s OK. The journey changes you; it should change you... You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind."

Woow.. .didn'y know he died, so sad.

Such a talented man, I really enjoyed his programs and the sincere way he was in his shows and the way the talked about Gastronomy in his descontracturated way.

RIP for this real Globetrotter!

RIP to him. I believe he has left a good legacy for other to follow. Thank you for sharing this post. Sometimes we need this to restructure our lives and be grateful for what we have today. Also try and live happily with others because we can not tell what will happen in the next moment

The world is a complicated beautifully ugly horribly wonderful place. And moments like you describe, with the dichotomy of wealth of Park Ave mingled with the smiling face of poverty is truly the human experience. It seems a fitting tribute to the man who could not go on. It is sad indeed.

We all march in the same direction, regardless of where we come from or even what we have, and it's so important to pay attention during that long walk to the end. We only get one go, so we should look around and take in all we can.

If such a thing can be, then I am sure he is smiling on his own spent time at this lovely tribute.

He touched so many people with his passion and humility, myself included. He made CNN a station I would actually tune into sometimes lol
