Let's Dive a Bit Into the Updates of @DTube and @DLive

in #apps6 years ago

I'm not a video type of guy, meaning I'd rather type than record or - God forbid - stream live. :)

But, I pay attention to what happens with the @dtube and @dlive apps, as much as a non-creator/curator can, because they, in my opinion, are two of the flagships of the Steem blockchain, and their importance is only going to grow.

Recently, both apps had some interesting developments.

I'll start with @dlive, because from what I understood their updates are more consistent. Because I rarely if ever can participate at the live shows of the streamers I follow, I didn't experience many of the improvements at first hand, but rather as they were described for the recording, for example in @jongolson's Monday Night Thoughts Show.

What is new for DLive?

  • new better servers
  • greatly reduced lag between the time of talking and the time the stream catches up with it (from about 30 seconds to a few seconds I believe Jon said it was)
  • off-chain chat, that permits attenders to the live stream to interact in a private chat, which won't end up on the blockchain (this is awesome for preventing blockchain clutter too, because these are usually very short interactions, and for popular live streams, there can easily be tens or hundreds of them during one short show, and many of them make sense only during the live stream!)
  • regular on-chain comments can of course still be used
  • a "gift" button, which allows anyone to easily make gifts which can have a symbolic meaning but also value in SBD or Steem; @exyle brought up one cool use-case in his daily vlog: to easily reward a useful post, even after the 7 days window is over (I wonder if such a button will be adopted by other apps too?)

What is new for DTube?

You might've known by now DTube takes 25% beneficiary rewards. That means that for every video that is uploaded to DTube, 25% of the rewards go directly to DTube.

That was not received very well by some video creators. DTube couldn't risk too much discontent and in an area where it was its strongest point compared to Youtube: directly rewarding the content creators.

So, they created a separate account called @dtube.rewards, which uses a portion of the collected beneficiary rewards we've talked about above to reward not the video creators directly, but the video content curators. This will of course benefit the video creators too, because their videos will be upvoted more.

How does this reward from dtube.rewards works? It's an extra reward for curating a content posted on DTube, which will be sent directly to curators' wallets from the account @dtube.rewards.

I've already received several of them.

@heimindanger said in one comment referring to the new distribution of rewards they introduced:

We want to increase the incentive for people who watch videos and upvote. Basically instead of 75/25 author/curator distribution, DTube is about 56/44.

That sure is a great incentive for curating videos!

I'm super excited about the changes on both platforms. Just shows me they are constantly listening to their community....Which is so important I think in the long run. Thanks for the plug sir!

Yep, the fact they are responsive to feedback and keep improving the apps is what makes me confident in their future too.
