Final Conflict - Concept of My Dream Game

Final Conflict is currently a concept that I am developing and hope to one day make into a game. It will be a cross-genre MMO, mixing grand strategy with real time strategy styles of gameplay, but also features RPG character development aspects. Every player character will be unique and all assets will be recorded using a public blockchain.

The setting for Final Conflict will be within a massive post-apocalyptic warzone. When a new player enters the game he/she must choose which of the two sides to enlist with. The initial enlistment period will be a set amount of game time and should take the player several months of playing to complete. While enlisted, players earn regular wages as well as bonuses for exceptional performance. Enlistment also guarantees that you will not lose glory credits upon death. Death in Final Conflict is handled in a rogue-like manner, respawning a clone some distance away from any fighting.

As players progress, they will accumulate both time-in-rate, and Glory Credits(in-game currency). When a set amount of these two things have been reached the player will be promoted to the next rank. Rank dictates how much control over the battlefield a player has. A rank 1 (Private) will only have control of their own character. Once they have experienced battle for a while they will be promoted to rank 2, Corporal. A Corporal will have their character and partner, either an NPC or a rank 1 player. Rank 3 (Lance Corporal) will lead a lance of 3 other soldiers. Rank 4(Sergeant): 7 other soldiers. Rank 4 will be the highest rank achievable within a player’s first enlistment.

Upon the completion of a players enlistment period, they will have an important choice to make: A) Re-enlist and unlock enlisted rank 5 (Staff Sergeant) and 6 (Master Sergeant), with 15 and 31 soldiers to lead respectively; B) Attempt to become a commissioned officer; C) Become a mercenary.

Not everyone will be selected to be an officer the first time they apply, also some people might find that they do not want to be officers. If selected for commission, Officers gain rank similarly to before, but their roles will be very different. They will be assigned portions of the map to be responsible for, their duties will be to distribute resources, order troop movements, assign missions, and generally oversee attacks and defence. Officer rank 2 will grant the player a wider area to command and 2 subordinate, rank 1 Officers to delegate responsibility to.

There are 64 Rank 1 Officer (Lieutenant) positions for each side in Final Conflict. 32 Rank 2 Officers (Captain), 16 Rank 3 Officers (Colonel), 4 Rank 4 Officers (General) and 1 Supreme Commander Rank 5. With each advancement in officer rank, a player will be able to zoom out of the map farther and have access to the map information of every soldier within his/her command. Orders are issued and are repeated down the chain-of-command from Supreme Commander to every Private in his/her army.

Playing as an officer will introduce grand-strategy style gameplay, in which players will monitor large sections of the map where units, buildings and objectives will be represented by Icons. As Officers gain rank they will have larger areas of responsibility and larger budgets for supplies to distribute to their troops. Officers are rewarded with a percentage of Glory Credits collected by all troops under his/her command therefore they are incentivised to lead effectively.

Becoming a mercenary is another options for players. Mercenaries do not earn regular wages and they will have to pay to respawn out of pocket, but they also have advantages and will appeal to many players. Firstly, they exist outside of a chain-of-command, thus are free to do whatever they want within the game world. Instead of time-in-rate, mercenaries need to gain “influence” points by completing bounty missions for one or both factions. Mercenaries will also be able to hire “subcontractor” mercenaries in order to be able to complete high value, high risk missions. This is also the area of the game where guilds may develop and an ad-hoc, player command structure can form.

Players will be in and out of the game world. In order to have seamless leadership, when a player leaves the game, his position will available for any appropriately ranked player in the area. Barring that, the position will be A.I. controlled until a suitable player arrives. When Final Conflict first launches, the game’s Development team, selected community members and A.I. will control leadership of both armies. Players will be able to take over these roles as they gain rank.

The playable area will be very large, requiring considerable time to travel from one section to another. To make the gameplay more consistent A.I. controlled soldiers will be used to populate the map, their numbers and difficulty levels will be dictated by area officer’s budgeting. These bots will also serve to fill player controlled squads.

Glory Credits, the games native currency, will be pre-mined before launch. The majority of credits will be used to seed the starting economy, the rest will be sold to players as part of a “Starter Package” containing their playable character, basic equipment and enough credits to play comfortably through the early game. In-game markets will provide other equipment options, including the resale salvaged equipment and items that can boost specific skills.

Player characters will have extensive skill sets, every usable item in the game will have its own associated skill. In this way every character will develop differently. Items that a player uses frequently will have their skills raise while ones that are no longer used will decrease (slowly).
Besides item related skills, there will be skills related to leadership, economy, etc.

Final Conflict is still in the conceptual stage of development and is rapidly evolving. It is my hope to find some like minded individuals who can share my vision and help make my dream game a reality. To help make a mental picture of what this game would look and feel like I have assembled some stock screenshots of some "similar" games: Company of Heroes 2, Total Annihilation, Total War Arena, Hearts of Iron 3, Ultima Online (Character Skills). The cover shot above is borrowed from what I believe is a PS4 game, although I am not certain of the title.

P.S. Please don't steal my original ideas. I would love to see this game developed, but not like that.

Sort:

I haven't been exposed to a niche in steemit that focuses on game dev but if you keep posting ideas like these, it would definitely encourage other aspiring game devs to talk about their projects.

There are artists in steemit, amateurs and pros you could try reaching out to in the hopes of creating some draft concept arts. I still have difficulty grasping some thoughts in your idea flow since these types of games are not my thing. But as a gamer and aspiring illustrator, I'm interested in seeing posts that do talk about game development.

While post like that are rather rare they are out there. We have a couple of people in Archdruid Gaming that are working on their own projects/games. Some of them share posts about how things are going and others are not as open.

This contest topic is fun in part as it could get more people to start thinking or getting involved with others. I know at least one person left a comment saying they might enter the contest by sharing what they are working on in the dream game they are building.

There is open source place like @utopian-io. A least one game that I know of that runs on the blockchain uses them in part to get more people involved.

Yeah, this contest got me reading other people's content containing subjects not familiar. I usually stay in the art niche and game dev topics were an extension of the passion because I also like concept arts in games.

I'd like to see more people talking more about game development here. Before steemit, I had less exposure to pros working on things that I have interests in also doing. Like my experience in talking with pro artist, I do hope I could also learn more from pro game devs or aspiring game devs.

Were you referring to steem monsters when you mentioned the game that runs on the blockchain or cryptokitties?

Steempunknet came to mind regarding that. They are another one that runs on our blockchain.

Then you have stuff like Steemnova where they took an open source game and modified it somewhat to use some elements of the bloc chain such as account sign in. While also using it to give out some rewards. There members can also create bug reports in attempt to get reward or provide translates.

There are lots of games running around. Many of them might be more text based then anything else. Still interesting to see how people use things here. There even a fun little account that people call in to get a dice roll. @rollthedice

Shake shake shake, you roll the 6-sided die.

You rolled a 4.

Love this contest, and all the comments my entry has received. Thanks for hosting this.

I don't know much about the game development process yet, but I have a feeling that some concept art may be the next step.

No idea about how game dev is from start to finish. I am involved with creating a game that was put on hiatus. We started with a story then work out the game mechanics before reaching the art part. Don't know if it was the right sequence but we just enjoyed what were doing before life got us busy. You can check our old progress at @takipsilim

Wish you luck on your game :D

I will take a look, thanks for your insight

Nice work!
I like the idea of have management levels within an MMO style game. Adding the blockchain for in-game currency is good idea to make it beneficial for players to keep participating. Forming teams to go on missions seems to be the primary aim to earn and dominate.

Thank you, I am a big fan of blockchain gaming. Although not absolutely necessary, I feel that having the ability to get tangible rewards from gaming is the way it should be. Yes, strong teams will be the key. I was thinking about having some kind of "effectiveness score" system, to be able to quickly choose between potential recruits for a team/squad/etc. But maybe that is a bad idea, not sure yet.

I'm loving it! I can offer to help with dialogue scripts or copyediting and voice acting!

Some thoughts, from someone who loves all of the genres implicated here:

  1. Always consider balance. The reason that Alliance or Horde can never win is that it would not be fun for other people. Unfortunately that takes away the fun of actually having a strategy to 'win the war'.
There must always be something to do, but players must feel like what they do does something, if that makes sense.

  2. Calcification can become the enemy of new adoption. Online game ogame is a lot of strategic fun with real importance, but new players are at a mathematical disadvantage always, and so the game managers create new servers every once and a while so that a new universe can 'start fresh'.

  3. Where grand strategy meets on the ground, real time action is where the magic happens. This is even true with actual military matters, consider the US in a conflict like Vietnam. Uncontrollable variables, disasters, morale, gumption, tenacity; these unpredictable or unquantifiable aspect of life serve to make every decision matter, from top to bottom.

I have no idea how to implement all the stuff I just said, but love to consider it! Cheers, and keep us appraised! Steem on!

Your offer is noted, thanks. Honestly, I have no Idea how to start development on something like this, but am reaching out to a few people who do. So we shall see where that goes.

  1. I invision winning to be possible but very difficult, requiring consistent, high quality player action. That said, I do not know (yet) what would happen after. Maybe a new map, or an additional faction. I am open to suggestions.
  2. Calcification, I see your point. Although in the chain-of-command structure for this "game" I think it may work well. New and old players will have to all work together. Squads/Platoons/Divisions will be made up of many different ranks of players, all with the same objectives. Older, higher ranked players progress further by effectively guiding the newbies in their charge.
  3. Agreed, I didn't mention it in the article but I am toying with some ideas to create chaos, I do not want players ever to feel safe.

I love the idea, I really do - and what I love too is the idea of collaboratively building a 'dream game'.

Thank you for thinking about and responding to my comment so thoughtfully!

Some follow ons -

  1. Maybe winning happens locally instead of globally. This is a point that will require a lot of thought, especially since most new players tend to join the 'winning team', look at the gym fiasco with pokemon go, the winning gym is the winning gym, and new players also join that one, creating a 'pile-on' problem. I think its lightning faction but I don't remember right now.

  2. Just be sure to avoid the problem with ponzi schemes. I think AI can make up for that, but you shouldn't 'need' a constant and growing stream of new player to be successful, since it eventually becomes a mathematical impossibility.

  3. Perfect!

Cheers!

What a well thought out game1 I wish you all the best of luck finding a partner to bring this game to life. Sounds like it will be great to play. I'm just curious if you are familiar with Amazon Alexa now open to development of games. Could be another avenue for getting some rewards and exposure. There is rumor too that Amazon will soon be introducing their own cryptocurrency.

Thank you, no I did not realize Amazon was into game development. I will look into that.

keep going man and keep us posted

Thanks, I have had this idea in my head for a while now but never really considered being able to bring it to completion. The responses I am getting from this post have lit a fire under my ass though, I will keep you all updated if anything happens.

I am honored, thank you.

Hey @creativetruth.
I have loved the fiction from your mind.
Thus will really be a nice game taking one a couple of months to travel.

And bringing a sense of achievement as one is promoted through the ranks like corporal, and achieving power and glory.

Keep it up

Thanks, I will.

@aristo80 This is a nice concept and I hope to see it come through. Some of the ideas sound similar to Fallout, but I love that game and this sounds intriguing to me. I am going to start following you to see if I can stay up-to-date on any updates on your Final Concept idea. I hope it works out for you!

Hey thanks, I am going to give it a try.

Good for you! I can't wait to watch the progress of how it works out! I bet it will be great!
