Contest: Survival Horror Moments Entry

Hey SteemCreeps

In the spirit of Halloween, all things jump scare I found this challenge to tell a story about the scariest gaming moment ever and it didn't take me long to think of one since its stuck in the memory well forever, it was more of a suppressed memory if anything. It goes back 10 years to when I first got the Nintendo Wii.

Yes, I know what you're thinking the Wii was only for kiddies games and Mario Kart and for the most part you would be right unless you were me and decided to get over 100 titles for the console.

Don't answer this call

One of those games was "Calling" and it was one creepy ass Japanese horror game. The game is basically like if the Ring, The Grudge and Unfriended had a frightening baby and you were left to babysit that baby for the evening and that exactly what it feels like to play the game.

What is the game about?

The story revolves around a mysterious haunted website called the "Black Page" which allows people to contact the dead and this page has begun to pull visitors into this creepy alternate dimension which your character finds themselves in and with only a cell phone you need to solve the mystery and find your way out.

No seriously, just a cell phone, no guns, no bats, nothing! Also, it's a flip phone, nope this was way before iPhone so here that clamshell phone is all that stands between you and death

Calling from the other side

So my parents would often fuck off on business and leave the country with my little brother and I home alone, living off soda and pizza and of course video games. Seriously, what more could we ask for right?

We would often play against one another but one night we decided to download Calling and try it out. We had another friend come over for moral support and because well there's pizza and snacks so who would say no.

Anyways the 3 of us would all take turns playing and providing moral support as we all would get too creeped out playing the game. The lights were off and it was pretty quiet, the game has no music so all you hear are the eerie sound effects of doors opening or shit falling off the shelf or the dreaded unexpected phone call which echoes from the remote in your hand when you least expect it.

As you explore the world you actually use the wii mote as your flashlight and your hand as it rumbles when you open doors and really ads to the immersion, you are really on edge the entire time not knowing when the next jump scare is coming from. Trust me your butthole is clenched pretty tight walking down the tiny corridors of a dark haunted house with nothing to protect yourself and trying to find a way out.

So where we are hyped up on sugar on edge and naturally freaking each other out with calls to watch out or premature jump scares when our phones, real cell phones start to ring and its way past midnight, no one needs to call us and the number is from a private number too. Which only begins to add to the intensity.

We decide to call it quits and let's not push this any further so we're going to switch off the game and call it a night. But before we did, we decided to chill outside and talk about the game over a shisha.

With the game fresh in our mind and those missed calls we all received also the topic of discussion we hear a loud bang on the gate in our backyard and we all freak the fuck out. All 3 of us arguing over who should check it out, we eventually decide let's all go and we see it's our neighbour, apparently, the front doorbell wasn't working and he was trying to call us to hang out lol

Might not be the most scary but definitely pretty freaked out by the whole thing and needless to say we didn't bother playing or finishing that game. A round of Tekken or Mario Kart anyone?
