A “must see” when visiting the Orkneys is the Earl’s Palace in Kirkwall. These roofless ruins tell a story of debauchery and excess in 17th century Scotland.

The Earl's Palace is located near St Magnus's Cathedral in the center of Kirkwall, Orkney, Scotland. It was built by Patrick, Earl of Orkney, its construction began in 1607 and was completed mostly by forced labor.

Earl Patrick built the palace after deciding the Bishop’s Palace at the cathedral didn’t suit his needs. He fabricated charges against the original owner of the property and had him executed in order to seize the land.

The palace continued to be the residence of the Bishops of Orkney until the late 1600’s when it became property of the Crown.

Never got to this particular castle when we visited Scotland, grand old castles, with history attached to each one (of which we saw many).

Try to imagine what they looked like during their years when inhabited, very much rich vs poor all the way back in history @rwedegis

Pity we did not have digital camera's back in the 70's, would have had so many photographs to go through it would have taken years to sort out 😊

It was definitely the time of haves and have-nots. If those stone wall only could talk. They would have some story to tell!

Digital cameras certainly do make a difference. I still can't get into smart phone cameras. I guess I'm just showing my age! LOL!

Not at all, still prefer a camera in hand, phone is in pocket available for messaging and phone calls, desktop PC and keyboard for working on, if that is showing preference, Oh well maybe it is an age thing.

As for living in big old castles they must have been cold, massive establishments requiring heating or wearing heavy clothing to keep warm. Yes if the stones could talk, sure to tell some amazing stories.

That looks like a fun place to visit. Europe has some incredible architecture. I'm sure this is much better if you are physically present (but your photos captured the beauty of the place too).

The Orkney Islands are well worth a visit! I only spend a day there, but could have spent weeks! There's so much history packed into such a small area!

What an awesome abandoned building, I love old places like that, it looks like it was quite regal in its day. Super cool, thanks for sharing with us :D

Thank you @insideoutlet! I think it was pretty much a party palace back in the day!

@rwedegis haha, kinda like The Great Gatsby style? That would have been a cool era to live in, well in some ways, others not so good haha.

I hadn't thought about Great Gatsby! But, you're right! It was probably more like that than just happy hour a the local pub!

@rwedegis I would love to go to one of those parties, I had a ball that was that theme once that was awesome!

Wow, definitely a place to add to the list of places to visit in Europe! I'm amazed that the building has held up so well over the centuries!

It is well worth a visit. The block walls seem to hold up well but the wooden roof didn't. Thank you for your comments!

I love a castle!! These photos are beautiful :) It's so cool to imagine life there when it was all in tact. Thank you so much for sharing Roger!

Thank you Lynn! Stuff like this is very awesome. Things are not build that way these days!

No they're not @rwedegis! Actually, you could say that about almost anything these days too 😅 Say hi to Sheila!

Majestic palace and fascinating history behind it.
Nowadays, in my opinion, they wouldn't be able to reproduce a structure like that,
not even if they tried....

Yes it is certainly a magnificent structure! Thank you for your comments!

You're welcome !!! :-)

nice photos, I love those old places!

Thank you Claudia!

They sure don't make em like they used to! Great captures of a different time.

Thank you for your comments!
