Abstract painting is my thing especially when I'm working on large canvas. I like to use complementary and earth colors on my pieces. It felt like it's easy to work and play around with these. I also like to use minimal colors like of 2 or 3 hues only. You can see most of my artworks in shades of brown, or blue and green. But this time, I was challenged to use BLUE and RED together in one painting. I haven't done anything like this before.

So in this art blog, i will share my experience with these colors.

Are you ready?

MATERIALS and TOOLS

  • Acrylic Paint : Pthalo Blue, Cerulean Blue, Permanent Red, Crimson Red
  • A 2" Flat Brush
  • 36" x 24" Framed Canvas
  • Spray Paint Black for detail and Clear Lacquer for coating.
  • Gold Acrylic Paint for the accent

PROCESS

Part 1

I prepared the canvas and materials on a platform I am comfortable to work onto.

I squeezed blots of red and blue paint all over the canvas.

I smudge the paint blots using flat brush. I started with blue and then work with the red hues.

I added more paint blots to the white part of the canvas to extend the colors. At this moment, I'm still confused how to make these two colors synchronized and pretty.

I flipped the canvas to see it in another perspective and started to fill the gaps again.

After finishing the first layer, I thought of adding black lines onto using black spray paint

Part 2

I thought after spraying black lines, it's done. But after few glances, I realized that it was so dark. So I added another layer of Acrylic paint on it.

I tried to connect each parts by painting more red colors like it is reaching the continents of the canvas separated by blue sea.

And then for the accent, my favorite accent ! The gold paint, I decided to add dots of gold on it. Like bubbles or scattered stones.

I also mixed water and cerulean acylic paint to make a drifting effect on the canvas. This I think would make the image brighter and livelier.

For the finishing touches, I looked of there are still white spots and covered it with permanent red.

I sprayed the canvas with clear lacquer to give that glossy finish.

And it is finished.

I named it UNITED because for the first time, I think I created a cohesive painting with contrasting colors. And I really like what it looks at the end.

I hope you all like it ! Thank you for dropping by. Have a nice day everyone.
