Ballet is notorious throughout the world as being the epitome of gracefulness. It comes at a cost as these dancers are showing light but experiencing extreme physical struggle.
Smoke in Mythology and Mysticism
Smoke in Mythology and Mysicism symbolizes something very relatable to the struggle in dance. As smoke lifts away from a burning fire and dissipates into the sky we watch and notice that it seemingly breezed into the heavens. The essence of smoke begins as a thick mass that dissipates as it ascends into the undetectable air above. This is where the symbolic characteristics originate.
Smoke represents the transition of matter into spirit, where the physical form moves into the spiritual realm. As it enters the spiritual realm, it no longer is imprisoned by matter. Spirit in it's natural state is free, but can exist without matter. Matter can't exist without spirit.
Dancers are like smoke, so graceful and smooth but internally the fire is burning. The transition from matter (internal) to spirit (the graceful movements) is so seamless it is hypnotic.
Smoke has characteristically been used throughout time to send secret and sacred messages between villages, people, communities.
These reasons make the connection between ballet and smoke so seamless that we had to create a mini-series of art that shows this.
