BEASTLY TALES

TIMBERLINE

Is it Yew or it is Oak?
Tell me please, it’s not a joke.
Well, clearly, it is not you!
You are standing, without a clue.
Yes, over there is where you are,
Just where you disembarked from your car.
Now, if Oak was indeed the wood for this table,
It’s value would be a lesser one, no fable.
For Oak is not as rare as Yew,
You know that Yew is well to do.

I’m pleased to say, Yew is of what it’s made
So, perhaps we can now stop this charade,
It was made in the eighteenth century too,
This venerable table, made of Yew.
It has inlays of Rose Wood and Walnut,
From the same patterns these have been cut.
I’d say the whole thing is worth five grand,
Such a valuation, conservatively, out of hand.

Now, number twenty in the catalogue,
Is a most rare piece cut from a log,
A Larch log, to be quite exact,
Working Larch is a very hard act.
Mahogany and Teak provide excellent wood,
Not so easy to work, and should be understood.
That working these woods takes extra skill,
But making such items provide a real thrill,
“What about Ebony?” A student did ask.
Ebony, that dark black wood, in glory did bask.
For furniture made in Victorian times,
Yes, for furniture, but don’t forget, also wind chimes.

Now Bartholomew Buzzsaw was a cabinet maker,
He had some fame, and was also a Quaker.
He was well known for his straight-backed chairs,
Along with the fact he had no graces and airs.
His brother was a bit of a boffin,
Whose favourite construction was a luxury coffin.
He would construct a flamboyant casket of Yew,
Keeping in mind that only Yew would do,
The price for such a thing was exorbitant,
Ensuring the client would rale and rant.
Then, when the crematorium trapdoor sprang shut.
The driving power was quickly cut,
The cadaver transferred to a Pine Box,
So that the fancy coffin could be topped with phlox,
Ready and waiting to be used again,
In this most lucrative recycling chain.

Well, it sounds like there’s much to be asked of Yew.
Questions just seem to come out of the blue.
Old English Longbow men used Yew for their bows,
Nothing else was quite right, through which energy flows.
Just as cricketers today will only have Willow,
The only wood for their bats, or even their pillow.
No, the pillow is more to the Japanese taste,
For resting their heads, while in bed they do baste!
