Is this Planet Earth ? ... visiting Aberystwyth, Wales

in #art6 years ago (edited)

Yesterday @jen0revision and I had to wait for a few hours in Aberystwyth. We made good use of our time there and went to various places including an exhibition at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre called Is this Planet Earth?

I can't explain it better than this :

‘Is This Planet Earth?’ is an art exhibition that is intended not for humans but for aliens. They visit us in the future but arrive too late to see nature in reality. Life on earth – wiped out by global warming, mass-extinction and contamination – now exists only in the imaginations of artists.

It was part of a Tŷ Pawb touring exhibition and was curated by Angela Kingston.

The photo above shows the work of Halina Dominska, Bound to. It reminded us a bit of stalactites and of plants or perhaps a combination of the two.

It's great to see that there is video of the artist discussing her work - alas I can't listen to it at the moment... something's happened to my 'sound' : You can listen here and here just in case you have better luck. There will be family activities during the week so we may well go back to check them out. I hope they're not just for very young children :D

So what would planet Earth be like to visitors from other planets or from the future ? There were many questions that the artists put to the visitors to the exhibition. We just strolled around looking and marvelling at the exhibits like explorers - I only took a few photos.

Actually, my favourite pieces of work this time were paintings and were made by Katherine Reekie, Bio Specimens. The series of paintings were both interesting to see as they reminded me of an old Victorian museum, but they were also quite 'humorous' (to me anyway); the artist explains it better of course.

My intention is not to depict reality but to nudge people to question and consider it.

We enjoyed our nourishment after all that exploration :D

Looks like you had a fun time @cryptocariad. Lunch looked good too! 😁

We did have a great time, but it was also rather tiring, @gillianpearce 😁

I don't know for how long I will continue though :D

I really like the bio-specimens. Fun when artists give an old-timey feel to modern subjects.

Yes, I agree @steven-patrick - also really important to include an element of fun / humour :D
