At Père Lathuille, 1879 by Edouard Manet

The painting above is one of my favourites by Manet. It shows clearly how love can be one-sided. Look at the guy's arm along the back of the chair.

Edouard Manet was a French painter who lived from 1832 to 1883.

Although he was upper class, he soon rejected that scene and became a painter. His paintings linked Realism and Impressionism. At the time they caused a lot of controversies because he painted real life. Nowadays, his paintings are considered to be the starting point for 'Modern Art'.

During his final 20 years (he was only 51 when he died), Edouard Manet made friends with Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Paul Cézanne and Camille Pissarro who were the Impressionist painters of the day.

Now I will show you some of my favourite paintings by Manet.

A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, 1882 by Edouard Manet

Courtauld Gallery, London

I love this painting for the incredible detail showing the things on sale at the bar and the background. The barmaid has such a French face!

The Monet Family in their Garden at Argenteuil, 1874 by Édouard Manet

This was how they relaxed all those years ago. I love their clothes but I'm not so keen on the chickens roaming near, haha.

Lastly, here is Manet in his studio. It looks very posed to me.
