Nº#08 | To be or not to be? What is an artist?

"What distinguishes a great artist from a mediocre one is, firstly, his sensitivity, secondly, his imagination and thirdly, his application." —Salman Rushdie.

In such a relative and changing world, it is difficult to determine what is art and who is an artist. Since the beginning of time we have seen the evolution of art go through very transcendental changes. Different artists contributed to world history through political, social and cultural changes. They all knew how to adapt at every moment and transmitted what was indicated (or perhaps contradictory?)

We know names, works and stories that changed the way we see everything, but do we know who the real artists were or what art was? In fact, if we look a little from centuries past to present we can see how many artists have been recognized as such after a posthumous period.

Vincent van Gogh: Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat

Van Gogh: who for years created quite complete works in the field of painting, more than 900 paintings and endless drawings, was one of the artists whose art was never valued as it should be and whose brother was the only person who really supported him in his career. His art was considered as such after his death.

Leonardo Alenza (1807-1845) Self-portrait

Leonardo Alenza: who also ventured into the area of painting could not know the success and fame achieved in his works. His work was full of portraits and excellent engravings but he was considered a "cursed" painter as he was surrounded by deprivation and problems throughout his career. After his death the critics came to his door and his art was recognized.

Portrait of Miguel de Cervantes

Miguel de Cervantes: even in centuries so far away the world of the arts was already pre-selected and recognized as such. Cervantes was one of those men whose literary work travels an arduous path of constant battle for literary success, his works becoming a direct influence of humanity a few years after his death.

H. P. Lovecraft, taken in June 1934 by Lucius B. Truesdell.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft: His literary work has now been recognized as a role model for all horror writers. This author began his journey at the age of 7 and 8 years later had already finished his first work of short stories. Lovecraft even created a circle of writers where they reviewed each other's work by correspondence, and several of their stories were published in some magazines, but their main works were not recognized until their death, when the circle of authors began to promote their work to different publishers.

Aleksandr Borodín

Aleksandr Borodín: Does anyone know about his play "Prince Igor"? Borodin turned out to be a talented composer and a chemist by profession during his lifetime who, precisely because of his work, had to leave his work unfinished, which after his death was an inspiration for new composers as well as a highly regarded work of Russian nationalism.

In this sense we can observe that the artist goes through a long process before being considered as such where the recognition as an artist goes from the personal vision "I am an artist" to the external vision "It is an artist" where both are linked to the contribution that your art can make to the culture in which it is diffused and appreciated.

From this we could understand that the main purpose of an artist is basically to create a "something" that allows him to be acclaimed or hated by the public that appreciates him by conceptualizing what we become ideas and then we shape him as sensitive creations with a powerful function in the society to which he is taken.

The relativity of art and emotions is precisely what makes us doubt what art is or is not. There are different types of arts that cause different emotions depending on the viewer, their experiences and situations, and there are others that are simply not ready to receive information or are not aware of understanding a message.

However, there is a way of understanding when we are artists, or rather, when we are artists in process.

Giving meaning to art | The emotion of creation.

Art has always been a relative discussion that has been going on for a long time. We can say that an artist is one who creates and makes you feel something, be it sadness, joy, displeasure, etc. However, they are feelings that we can have with just a brief conversation without artistic ends, so what separates an artist from an ordinary person?

The artist not only possesses an unfathomable passion, but also possesses the discipline required to develop skills or talents in some of the fine arts, and also has an exorbitant creativity, which many people may misunderstand or simply not understand, which is why it is often said that artists are "misunderstood", have a different world view, usually see everything reflected in the art they are dedicated to and thus inspiration comes to them.

Portrait of an Artist "Short Documentary"

Through their art they can convey a wide range of feelings and inspire hundreds of people, this does not mean that a person who is not an artist can not do it, in fact, many of the great characters in history are not dedicated to a concise art, but they do possess one of the characteristics of an artist, and it is passion, passion for what you love.

We believe that all people are artists, because through human feelings you can create some beautiful art (whether amateur or not), and of course, we all have the ability to develop our artistic talents depending on our vision and our disposition. However, there are people who are born with high artistic magic, so they have the ability to embrace different kinds of arts and different kinds of feelings. They are people who were born to create and to have art as their north, therefore they have the capacity to explore and exploit their artistic abilities through the discipline, constancy and deep study (be it self-taught or academic) of their branch.

There are intuitive artists up to their veins who can write, sing, paint, etc. without ever having to take classes, but it is obvious that due to time and their artistic discipline they can raise their abilities to the maximum and notice changes from the first work to the most recent.

There are people who find it very difficult to maintain an academic discipline, in fact there are many musicians who are more intuitive through their musical ear than through a score guide, as is the case of Fito Páez, David Lebón or even the incredible Pedro Aznar. Everyone was afraid of the studio, in fact Fito's piano tutor dispensed with teaching him since he never learned to read sheet music and played the songs by analyzing them through his musical ear, imitating them.

In addition to this we must take into account that to be an artist we must cultivate our talent, we must manage certain characteristics that allow a greater growth of our inner artist, such as:

  • Constancy: When it comes to making your artistic works.
  • Perseverance: no matter how long the road, you should never give in to the creation of your art.
  • Time: dedicate the necessary time to your art, more than just the amount of time you must know how to make the most of even the smallest second in what you are doing.

What distinguishes the meaning you give to your art will come when you manage to unify your talent, dedication and that sense of creating something great through your ideas.

So, what now?

Throughout history we have seen how artists have come to sculpt their talent through various tools that society has given them as well as their own intuition. One could say that the question What is an artist? is still in the air and we do not have an exact formula to answer it, however, the examples and tools presented in this editorial as well as in previous issues serve as a guide for people to take on the task of building their art and at the same time that artists in training begin to philosophize about who they are and where they are going.

Let's grow our talent and build real art.

Art of feeling, feeling to grow, growing to create.
