Hi Steemit family!

Feminism in Pop Art by Rosalyn Drexler

We continue with the most important women of Pop Art, those women who touched an era full of prejudices that would end up being one of the most liberal periods of history and that would end with a more genuine expression of freedom the Hippie culture or the boys of flowers. Rosalyn Drexler's turn is more than an artist a social fighter. Join me on some of the most important aspects of her life.

Recognized as one of the most controversial and multifaceted artists in the pop movement, she was also an excellent playwright, writer, and sculptor. After Sister Corita, she was the most ardent activist on women's rights, her work includes a great excess of sexism, as well as serious criticisms of racism.

This is another clear example of how the figure of the supposed top leaders of the pop movement such as Roy Liechtenstein and Andy Warhol overshadowed the work of Rosalyn Drexler and other women of the movement, and that the artist not only met these artists but also held exhibitions in the same halls between the 60s and 80s, although it was not only the painting that was recognized by Rosalyn Drexler, was also an excellent writer, sculptor, playwright and theater director, directed all the plays she wrote, and officially wrote more than 9 books, in addition to receiving some important recognition as Obie awards.

One of the fundamental ideas for the artistic development of Rosalyn Drexler's work, is her reiterative messages to a woman free of sexism and racism, this narrative achievement thanks to the elements that conjugated in her works, techniques such as collage, oil painting with electric and intense colors gave her the category of Pop Art.

Perhaps her message was not clear at the time, many works were misinterpreted especially by men who did not understand the importance of the role of women in the work of Rosalyn Drexler, made recurrent use of multiple messages from the mass media to make their works. She repeats this in the same way in her plays, literature, and it is precisely this that has given her the privilege of still being at the top of the art scene today as the most multifaceted woman in Pop Art, as well as being a completely self-taught woman.

Some of his most emblematic works with "Marilyn Perseguida pour la Muerte" (1963), "Chubby Checker" (1964) and "¿It's true what they say about Dixie" (1966) and "Nazi in the garden" (1988), works that in my opinion managed to overcome light years to Andy Warhol that although I do not detract from the appearance of this being in the world art scene, I prefer to focus on a woman like Drexler who contributed more than paintings a way of seeing the world, where women were not reified by the male-dominated system.

And there is also something that can be appreciated in this artist, the artistic metamorphosis from the 60's to the '80s when her works are more mature and complex, and more towards the side of neo-expressionism which gives her a new vision and way of contemplating and developing art, even in 2007 when she was 90 years old she made her own exhibitions, with her firm stance against patriarchy which has characterized her activist spirit more than artist, she has often called herself an activist and not an artist. Saying that art is only an instrument to develop ideas.

Perhaps the work that has impacted me the most is, "Ana Falling (Was She Pushed?)" (1989) a painting that narrates the murder of Ana Mendieta who was a friend of Drexler in the 70s, Mendieta died after falling from a 34th floor, the husband was the main suspect and that years later in the trial would be free for not having enough evidence to prove otherwise, even with this painting does not blame the husband directly if not the judicial system. It is also clear that the intimate way of relating to her art is what characterized her throughout her life, a very close connection with her own works.
