Hi Steemit family!

Marie Laurencin in the cubist period

Today I bring you another of the great painters of the Cubist period who, although I do not produce works in this French genre, walked hand in hand with movement. I will be more attentive to look for stories of women painters, many forgotten in an artistic world that, despite being delicate, was a profession that was denied to many women, most in the past had to do their work clandestinely. Today it is Marie Laurencin's turn. Come with me to learn more about the life of this incredible artist.

Marie Laurencin was born in 1885 in a suburb of Paris, she took her first steps in the art of painting thanks to classes she received anonymously and at night she learned the trade, she also had loving relationships with the poet Guillaume Apollinaire who would motivate her to continue painting in addition to giving her influence, so she could meet Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.

Among her main skills in painting you can notice great dexterity in the use of colors and flat figures, quite rhythmic in the composition, in her themes you can see many female figures almost always alone, also use a pastel color palette that gave elegance and a touch of fantasy to her works... in addition to painter was also prominent illustrator of book covers on request as well as creator of countless figurines, her style was seriously linked to the avant-garde Bateau-Lavoir but as mentioned earlier was more linked to the Cubist movement.

Her studies at the Humbert Academy allowed her to meet many personalities of the art of the moment such as Georges Braque with whom she established a great friendship. At that time Marie Laurencin painted mainly portraits and self-portraits, in 1907 she would have her first big exhibition in the famous salon of the independents.
In 1921 she had a quite mature style, although she never stopped painting female portraits her main inspiration, also continued to learn other techniques such as engravings, and xylography that increased her range of artistic creations, also participated as a theater decorator and made costumes for the ballet Ciervas, Russian general ballet and some extra work for the company of comedy and comedy opera in France.

Her style varied very little in the time she was painting, and I'm not saying she was monotonous in her work, it was constant in the construction of her identity as a painter. Thanks to her influence within the cobist movement she was able to contact and carry out countless works that allowed her to develop.
Always its link with the feminine and sensuality characterized Marie Laurencin's paintings, it is as if they were compositions more musical than pictorial for its rhythm, very simple without so much theorization achieved a simple style and full of rhythm something that captivated the gallerist and curators of the time.

She had a certain predilection for Greek paintings, as it was normal for her to lengthen the shapes of female bodies. Thanks to her presence in the pictorial arts at the time many women were inspired by this woman who without so much scandal managed to position herself in the French art world. Today we can enjoy her artistic production, many universities and fine arts take her as a reference in the cubist period although her style has little or almost no kinship. In her memory there is the Marie Laurencin which houses the largest collection of paintings of the painter
