Hi Steemit family!

Between surrealism and the figurative, Alberto Giacometti

Today I bring you one of the most multifaceted artists of the Cubist period and those who followed, a painter who valued different techniques to spend his life in various genres and movement, I'm talking about Alberto Giacometti. Come with me to learn more about his life and work.

Alberto Giacometti was born in Borgonovo - Switzerland, in 1901, son of the great Italian Impressionist painter Giovanni Giacometti, his childhood and adolescence would be marked by much art due to the influence of his father's immediate environment.
When he comes out of his adolescent stage just after finishing his secondary studies he begins his trajectory in the world of art, he registers in the academy of fine arts in Geneva when he finishes studies he moves to Paris where he studies in the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Montparnasse, from that moment he begins his incursion in the cubism, but soon he would begin to feel attracted by the surrealism and begins to paint, in that epoch he exposes in the room of Tuileries where I gain notoriety due to his proposals of symbolism inside the surrealism.

In his works, we can find an ample study of the human figure and varied objects that manage to put them in the center of attention managing to displace with symbolism to space, an effective way to isolate. He lived for some time in Montparnasse where a number of artists such as Andre Breton, Jean-Paul Sartre, Max Ernst, and Pablo Picasso lived, feeding the gatherings more, taking advantage of discussing artistic theories in his time.

Already in 1935, he premiered as a sculptor, his works were characterized by a thorough study of the human figure. Giving almost exclusive priority to the features of the face, especially the gaze. Other common characteristics were the stylized and stretched form of his sculptures.
When the Second World War broke out he moved to Geneva, where he married Annette Arm, during his stay in Geneva he experienced the best moment of his life in terms of production, his wife was a great moral support and as a model, although he always had the collaboration of his family, including cousins, uncles, who served him as a muse, but especially his wife as he had a more intimate treatment where he could explore and Annette achieved her mission.

His sculptures were exhibited in Paris at the Maeght Gallery and at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York City making his art cross the borders of Europe where he had already gained much recognition. In the 50's he used bronze because its price had fallen, in times past bronze was very expensive only a few could afford to buy this metal. This stage is recognizable by the detail of his sculptures.
His style was closely linked between cubism, figurative art and surrealist art, which gave him a production rich in techniques and variety. Besides, very few painters of his time were sculptors and painters at the same time, something that with time he was able to deal with.

Other notable aspects of his work are the solitude in isolated spaces, his style was unique, although the techniques were those that everyone adopted at the time, also managed to overcome the whole problem of war without affecting their production, something that was common in other artists who expressed war through their production. Perhaps there was something social about Giacometti's painting.
At the end of his life, he returns to his native country where he settles in Coira and spends his last days of life. He died on January 11, 1966.

He liked to elongate the face and leave the subjects appear drawn out and careworn. Perhaps by life. Your examples show them always pensive. That their problems are swirling inside their mind.
