Artistic space #54 - Electronic sculptures by Miguel Rivera

in #art5 years ago

Hi Steemit family!

It's sad to see how many European countries send millions of tons of technological scrap in ships to Africa that deliver it as supposed equipment that still works, but the reality is that it's garbage, The artist that I will present to you takes computer pieces that are given as scrap metal and turns them into very funny sculptures, his name is Miguel Rivera, and he works in a naval base of the United States Army, his superiors have been amazed by Rivera's artistic work, granting

him special permission to dedicate time to this work.

Miguel Rivera is an artist by vocation, his real profession is a system administrator, who one day was annoyed by the incredible technological dump that had been generated in his workplace, so he took a lot of used machines, gutted some and turned them into beautiful sculptures.

source

His very basic concept is to do things with the pieces of a hard drive, the result is creations that are characterized by their extreme complexity. Each hard disk is disassembled and disassembled, and then cut into smaller pieces, using a variety of tools to achieve the objectives.

source

One of his first sculptures was made with a standard 3.5 inch hard disk, and his intention was to make a car, he needed about 33 hard disks, each wheel has more than 8 disks, he didn't stick anything, he only had to make some modifications and the rest was screwed without any effort.

His second work, a mini car made with 29 hard disks, another of his project was a motorcycle, and so as the artist was innovating in new sculptures, also increased the degree of difficulty, especially to obtain cleaner results, and with more details. Only for the bike, it took at least 3 full weekends, the front wheel has 8 discs and the rear 28.

One of Rivera's most complex pieces is a Robot that the artist calls his masterpiece, it took him 2 full weeks to create it, he has about 14 portable hard drives, in this piece he managed to engineer them to show part of the internal components of the hard drives.

source

Rivera also included a Dell 2950 cable management arm on the robot and folded the hard drive covers to showcase its interiors. It is amazing how someone can have infinite creativity to reuse objects that literally end up in landfills, this is a major environmental problem, especially for the highly polluting components that possess most electronic devices, although not everything is wrong, initiatives such as this artist, are also initiatives of large companies that are responsible for recovering part of the internal components of the circuits, one of the most recovered metals is tin, followed by lead, and the coveted gold, which is considered the best conductor in electronics.

source

The artist has promised to visit African countries where every year millions of tons of technological scrap arrive and thus be able to make conversations to address this problem that seems to have no end, and promote plans to recover materials, as well as teach their art to the youngest so they can enjoy this wonderful artistic pastime.
