My Turtle Art: DROWNING OUR OCEANS, Watercolor+Coloredpencils 🐢👩‍🎨

in #art6 years ago

Medium: Watercolor + Coloredpencils 🎨

I created a "plastic pollution" art concept for awareness and appreciation for sea turtles.

We all know plastic is becoming a global crisis.

  • There are more plastic pieces than the stars in the milky way.

  • Microplastics and nano plastic is present in all living organisms.

  • All bottled water contains plastic particles, no matter what brand, where its from and even if it's purified or mineral water.

  • Plastic pollution will cause hormonal disruption leading to cancers.

  • Tons of plastic are being discarded to landfills and thrown in the ocean.

  • Companies continue to produce tons of plastic everyday.

PRESENTING MY ART

Will you pledge to use less to zero plastic?
Title: Drowning Our Oceans

The title is inspired by an instagram page I am following. They promote zero plastic and clean up the beach on their side of the world. I just thought to help them by making art and support them even if it was just to cheer them up with my art and promoting their page.

THE ART PROCESS

🐢 (1) I painted the turtle and jellyfish. After sketching, I used my kuretake gansai tambi watercolor set and a flat paintbrush to apply the first layer (base) of light shades, yellow, orange, pink. To create details I used a smaller brush, a rounder tip good for small details and dots.

🐢 (2) After layering and completing the subjects, I use coloredpencils to color the background. I used a varied array of colors such as yellow, orange, skyblue, pink, and bluegreen (and shades of aquamarine), and burnishing it with a very light pastel shade of blue, purple and fleshtone.

My art materials

These traditional Japanese watercolors were designed for professional artists and crafters, but they can be enjoyed by novices and experts alike. The non-toxic, water-based paints are lightfast and ideal for sketching, illustration, sumi-e, cards, and more! Each watercolor block comes in an individual tray that can be removed from the palette during use. The underside of the box lid features a color chart that you can fill in yourself using the actual watercolors so that you can see exactly how they will appear when used.

This is very vibrant and has a glossy finish to it. It is not as translucent but I highly recommend it. This is different from the previous watercolor I used, although blending it is harder, the final result is much better.
I won this set in an anime drawing contest, I didn't know they cost that much though 😅

They are artist grade and non toxic, so that's great! They are almost the same league as koi brand.

  • MITSUBISHI UNI NO.888

    Source

Created specifically for coloring in adult coloring books (or "coloriage" as it's called in Japan, taken from the French word for coloring), this set includes 36 colors of Uni's widely popular colored pencils. Because adult coloring books tend to feature animals and plant life, natural hues like blue, green, and brown are most heavily represented, with many shades of each to allow for intricate details and gradations. The pencils feature vivid colors, have a pleasant feel, and color in spaces uniformly. They come in a beautifully designed case with artwork inspired by that found in adult coloring books.

This is good for artist works but it's more of a student grade set. One good thing about this is it has natural hues good for realistic art. They are vibrant as well, its pigment is wax based and not oil based like the well known prismacolor or polychromos but their colors are similar.

I recommend this as well.

WORK IN PROGRESS PICTURES

I will share first my original concept and how it ended up.

🥀 My original idea
IMG_20180802_000241_332.jpg

This is more direct in expressing plastic pollution tragedy. But, my mom insisted I draw the turtle in a more natural setting so people appreciate the beauty of it naturally.

🥀 Let's sketch! And apply base tone.
PhotoGrid_1533285550094.jpg

🥀and the turtle magically appears! Jk
Layers of orange, red, yellow, white, brown and green. Voila!

🥀 Next, jellyfish
PhotoGrid_1533807230756.jpg
The tricky part is starting light, light colors with light hands to make the thin and flowly tentacles.

There it is,

Then I add purple spots, mixed with some green and brown. Turtles fin.

Deciding background 🥀

I was thinking what background to make, I found some interesting references and I attempted to imitate but I didn't feel so confident, I decided to make an a coloredpencils background instead.

🥀 Building background starting light to dark.

Unfortunately the heavy texture of the watercolor paper made it quite hard to darken the pencils. But anyway, the soft and light background is relaxing.

IMG_20180807_153220_057.jpg

Just add lightly layers of light colors.

Then it is finished!

Here's the end result

I took a pic on the night I finished it and in the morning. The color slightly changes depending on the lighting and of course, the final edit of the picture.

I always say nature is truly beautiful, just have the eyes to see it and a heart to keep it that way.

It's not just straws, the small plastic bits, bottle caps and glitter make their way to the sea, birds eat it, animals get caught in nets, sea creatures eating plastic bags. I don't have to post their photos, I am sure youve seen how devastating this all is. Hopefully we can do a lot about this.

  • We are all key players
  • There's no planet B
  • One earth, one chance
  • Plastic free

Lovely art ! The step by step is nicely presented and I love the final version of the picture <3 The turtle and jellyfishes are detailed so nicely <3 Love the colours you worked with here, also <3

I do hope humans will take better care of our ocean ... It is always sad when people are just taking things for granted and not realizing that we cant just take and take and take and take and take from Earth.

We have to give back, too.

Beautiful post <3

Yes we need to doubletime on clean ups.
Thank youuuuu for the positive feedback
