Mural [Process] : Collective Memory

in #art5 years ago

Mural created for a young artists exhibition at the International Art & Antiques Fair, 7 m (22 ft) / Acrylic paint. From sketch to the finished painting, the entire process took around 7 days.

Here you can see the original sketch, drawn with ink and markers on tracing paper.
The concept for this painting revolved around shared memories and ideas present in the collective mind of our generation.

Although the mural has previously appeared on a couple of (print) publications, it is the first time I'm sharing any of the process and details.

First thing was applying a white fill inside every shape in order to seal the surface for better coverage. I always do this no matter the scale of the painting, it helps the colors to pop-out a bit more.

With the white paint ready, I started to apply colors with a flat brush (around 2-3 coats for every shape).

More colors...

After the main colors were done, I continued to paint the red outline and details around it with a fine brush...

...and finally, it was time for the black fill and outline.

As a collaboration, another artist created a small installation displaying some of the objects and tools (spraycans, brushes, paint containers, skateboard, pencils, markers, etc) usually present in our daily routines...

That mural looks sick man, what do you recommend me if I wanted to do something a little more differnet with more details in it like, let's say a really nerd and huge map of the Middle-Earth? The process of painting and filling with colors would be the same?

Hey elfranz, thanks man :D I would suggest to keep a limited and probably a washed color scheme so it doesn't look too cluttered with all the details you want to fit in... best thing to do is to make sure you have enough paint so you don't run out of it during the process and can fix any details afterwards, cheers!

Graffiti and Mural are the modern concept of the art: art evolves day by day.
Rural paintings, Impressionism and Cubism was the past and thanks to them today we have our art.
Colours and lines are always the main characters in art tales.

@jsf, you did an incredible job. When you sketch the original design, it only a small piece of paper? 😱It not easy to transfer it into a large one. And you did it..I love the color you applied, it very bright and attractive. I curious if you made mistake in the painting, how you cover it? If in normal painting, it easier to cover the mistake by applied another layer. But with this big drawing, how you do it?

Hey @oliviackl, yeah it was actually a sketch in A4 size paper, and it was acually about paying a lot of attention so I didn't make any mistake because there was no time later to fix it, the exhibition was to open the next day after I finished, so yeah... just a bit of pressure (: Using acrylic painting does give you the advantage of covering mistakes when you make a big scale painting, which wouldn't have been the case if I'd used an oil based paint. Thanks for your feedback!

It's so interesting to see how other artists work. What an achievement to create a large mural. I really enjoyed this post.

definitely, one of my favorite things around here is being able to observe many kinds of creative work, thank you @deemarshall :)

Wow! Just wow! 🤗😍

Artists using big canvass are really beyond talent, its a skill! Just imagine envisioning the idea on a piece of paper and zooming it at 500x to fit a wide wall. It is not an easy task rather it comes with great commitment, passion and dedication to your work.

I am always in awe how they do that. It would take several days of painting and a few sleepless nights before you could finish it. And it is all worth it!

Thank you for taking us into the step by step procedure and process of doing a wall mural.. really really splendid job!

Cheers!

whoa thanks for your words @maquemali! Those were some some days of almost no sleep but lots of fun and definitely worth it after seeing the piece coming to life in such a scale. Big scales might be a bit intimidating at first, but its only a matter of practice and enjoying the process, I believe anyone can do it, what matters the most is taking the risk :D

Thank you for this opportunity to observe the creation for the gallery. It is really enjoyable to be able to look into the process of creation, like the moment when you have all your thoughts and idea together on the paper, so you can see how it would look like once on the wall. I believe that moment is time consuming, to plan to make sure that it will fit one appropriate format and them to make a sketch on that white “canvas” in your case wall. Usually it is happening with me when I have such moments. Sometimes coloring and details can be changed just depending on the mood and may be sudden ideas. The final result is gorgeous, love it.

Hello @stef1 You are totally right, translating the ideas to a bigger scale was quite something, specially because of the tight deadline. I remember the main idea changed a lot and I ended up adding new elements while I was actually doing the mural that were not present in the original sketch, things like small details and some colors. Thanks for stopping by, appreciate it! (:

Seven meters for seven days! That is really big and an incredible job! You did this alone? Very good!

The painting looks great for a wall panel. It is very colorful. Though, I have to admit that I am still trying to decipher something from the painting. Is there something that I need to find out on the painting or is it a pure "abstract" thing? What is it?

Hey macoolette, yeah it was such a challenge, lucky me my wife was always on my side and helped me a bit with the painting and filling out some things, not to mention the constant support (: The mural is mostly abstract although it has some figurative elements on it like the spraycan on the right side, thanks!

You are blessed with your skills and more blessed to have a very supportive wife! 😊
