STREET ART IN MONTREAL 16

in #art6 years ago

The King's Daughters (Les Filles du Roy) is another beautiful mural from Montreal!
Located at 600 Dublin street, corner with Wellington boulevard, this mural is a total delight! A century of history condensed into an artwork! You need to see it with your own eyes, as photos don't do justice to its beauty!

This stunning mural was realized on the wall of St. Gabriel school, as a reminder of the bravery of King's Daughters.

It honours the first 36 women who arrived from Europe to New France in 1663.

Maison St-Gabriel (museum and historic site), St. Gabriel school and the city commissioned artist Annie Hamel for creating this mural.

It was inaugurated in September 2013 during the festivities organized for celebrating 350 years since the King's Daughters arrival.

Between 1663 and 1763 close to 800 women arrived to New France thanks to King Louis XIV financial sponsorship program.

Back in the days most of these women settled in Quebec; only a few of them continued their journey to Montreal (Ville-Marie).

Those who did, ended up under the protection of parc Marguerite-Bourgeoys, who arrived to Ville-Marie in 1653.

Her vision was to instruct and educate the children and the first arrivals, at no cost.

Marguerite-Bourgeoys was the founder of the Notre-Dame Congregation and established the original Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours.

art and also nature is best to understand anything.... @lymepoet

They do go hand in hand sometimes!

We'll see how long it lasts before getting bombed, I rmember when I lived there it was like oh a mural daycare? bomb that, on churches and everything, I think it's because they are French or something

Though there are a lot of murals in Montreal that stayed intact so far. It's true that some may get vandalised but I don't think that being French has anything to do with it. Also the existence of 4 "legal walls" where anyone with a spray can could practice his artistic skills reduced the number of such acts. Thank you for stopping by!
