Before and After painting

If I can I like to try to post something everyday. But since I don't always have time to make a brand new piece everyday, one way that I've managed to maintain this is taking an old painting and touching it up before posting it. I usually don't show the old version, but today I thought that might make for a more interesting post than simply showing the new version.

So some of the things I changed and why

Shape/Color variation and depth
detail_01.jpg

In the old version this section almost had just one color and pretty much just one texture. This comes from trying to do too much with a single brush and texture. By combining more tools you can get something that looks more interesting. You can also do this with the same brush manually, you just have to make sure you're consciously thinking about it.

The other thing I added was layers of atmosphere. in the old version it was pretty flat, but in this version I tried to add more subtle layers.

More Shape Variation

Again, more shape variation, but this time to imply scale. In the old version, the shapes here were just simple rounded shapes which for one look unrealistic, but also don't show how big this cliff is supposed to be.

Fixing Perspective

The perspective was off in this boat in the old version, so I just warped it into a more proper perspective.

You guessed it, more shape variation

Even though I'm solving a lot of these issues with the same answer it's for different reasons. It's generally unappealing to put two almost identical shapes next to each other(guideline, not a rule) You'll typically get something that looks more interesting by adding some natural looking variation, especially in a scene like this for something organic.

Alright. I think you guys get the picture, I don't want to bore you. Anyway, hope you guys enjoyed my art ramblings! Let me know in the comments. Do you ever update old works, or is everything brand new?

As always, thanks for looking peeps!

I hope you have a really big backlog as it can be challenging for artists to keep up with posting every day XD

I didn't think your old version was too bad at all, the new one does look a lot better in terms of lighting and depth though :)

very pretty, @midlet ! i love how you do the foggy effect on the new one, it makes the forest even more mysterious and gives a feel of coldness <3

Superb Painting man!

There is no limit to perfection! You can endlessly fix the old job but sometimes it makes sense to create something new again :)
