Thoughts on Steem Marketing

I'm still reflecting on the 60 seconds of Steem ads that were made for that competition which if you haven't gone and voted on, please stop reading this and go vote For me preferably Reminder that you vote by voting on the comment with the creators name in it.

Here's the video I made for quick reference.

Enough shilling myself.

One of the things I noticed was that the vast majority of these videos still focused on the message, generally speaking, "Steem is a place for content creators to get rewarded." I think at the end of the day maybe that's the thing that an average person can absorb in a short amount of time, but I feel like it's only the tip of the iceberg. I think that might be a good marketing angle for Steemit, or Steempeak or Busy etc. All the blogging based frontends, or more like all the social applications, but there's quite a bit more than that going on here.

The core functionality of Steem to simplify it, is it's an inflationary cryptocurrency where the stakeholders have the power to distribute those inflationary funds. Rewarding content creators is one application of that, but crowdfunding(Fundition) is another, you can also use it for stake weighted voting, polls(Dpoll), to incentivise certain behaviors(Actifit) and a lot more.

Even that is only touching on the distribution functionality. It's also just a secure cryptocurrency like all the others and has those same benefits of being borderless, fast to transact, censorship resistant, etc.

So I think that the idea of promoting "Steem is a place where content creators get rewarded" I sort of agree and disagree. I think that's a pretty good pitch for Steemit, but not Steem. I think with Steem the focus should be more as a platform, like if you were to make an ad for iOS or Android. You wouldn't just pick one app(even if it was the dominant use case app) and build the marketing around that. You focus on it being an environment for lots of applications to live, which is exactly what Steem is. At least those are my thoughts.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for looking peeps!

I would go farther and say "Steem is a place where content creators come to be rewarded" is a TERRIBLE message, because it isn't really true and basically sets up new users to be frustrated and disappointed. A huge part of the churn of new users is because that has been the advertising angle Stinc has used. Even if you want to advertise Steemit.com I think the better angle is to advertise it as a social media network where everyone can control what content they see, without an algorithm serving up ads or content it thinks you "want" to see. That is the value proposition of steemit.com as I see it, particularly in light of the growing backlash against Facebook.

But I totally agree with you - advertising for Steem should be focused on the Steem ecosystem and everything that is possible (of which, social media network is quite possibly the worst fit with the underlying blockchain technology - the amount of non-consensus transactions that are currently being handled on the Witness consensus layer because of the social media use case is crazy, and is not scalable to mass adoption).

Voted for ya :)

Thanks so much @carlgnash! I agree that currently that’s probably going to just lead people to disappointment. There’s already tons of videos of people pooping on STEEM because they came here tried it out, were invisible then gave up.

I do hope I. The future with some new features it can EVENTUALLY be a place where content creators can earn but yea, right now it’s not going to happen for the vast majority of people.

I do agree with your sentiments regarding the contest. Sometimes contests turned out to be won based on the popularity of the creator without fully judging the content based on the rules and quality. One of the rules was:

It can't contain third party elements, hence needs to be original.

I am not sure that everyone that submitted a video followed this rule after viewing several submissions.

Additionally, one of the challenges that earlier marketing campaigns have had was the confusion of Steem and Steemit. I feel you did an excellent job in identifying Steem and your video should be in the top three @midlet.

Yea I think it would be a good idea to maybe promote the voting post to trending since I think there is a fair chance that just not many people are seeing it.

I mean I can’t blame people for supporting their friends, but the overall vote values on all the posts is still really low, like I think the highest one is only $2 and change, that says to me just not that many people are voting.

If you could nutshell that for people with the attention span of gnats with severe adhd, I think it’s a much better pitch. It’s part of what’s making me hang around (most of what makes me hang around is interaction, and given that I ha e read some complaints about there not being enough of it you can probably take a guess how much I’m getting on my other sites 🤣).
