The Book of Elohibaluk

in #art5 years ago

It had been already more than three moons since Elohibaluk had gotten his name and had started his journey. The man (elo) who looks beyond (hiba) the great wall of ice (luk) was hungry, tired and nervous. Last night he heard wolves howling nearby and for the last hour or so, he felt like he was being watched, followed even. He grasped his heavy wooden club even tighter as he scanned his immediate surroundings, ready to fight or flight.

Suddenly Elohibaluk heard the soft sounds of snow being crushed by many, careful treading paws all around him. He froze in his tracks, raised his club and with a strong, but calm and decisive voice he said, “No wolves, there is no food here”, “Only Death is here, yours and mine. The sounds of crushed snow dissolved at once and in that instant it became as quiet as if that exact moment in time had frozen and the world was reduced to nothing more than him, his surroundings and the wolves. For what seemed an eternity, Elohibaluk stood there with his raised club and kept saying those words. “Go away wolves, I am not food, you will die here”.

And then they were upon him. Six, seven wolves emerged and started circling him. Growling and drewling they got closer and closer, ready for the kill. But Elohibaluk charged first. At the moment the first wolf jumped he lurged towards it. His club met the wolf mid-air and crushed it’s skull before it thumped lifeless in the snow next to him. Elohibaluk spun on the spot and ran for another wolf, shouting and swinging his club harder and faster than he had ever done before. That wolf ran. Elohibaluk spun again and saw two more wolves running off. The three remaining wolves however did not run, but jumped on him all at once. Elohibaluk hit one of the wolves that was going for his legs in the side and shattered it’s ribs. One more mighty swing ended the assault on his other leg and the life of the assaulting wolf.
Now only one wolf remained. Elohibaluk looked it straight in it’s eyes and shouted “Run wolf, Run now or die here”. Neither man or wolf moved, but stared in each other eyes. In fear, but in awe it seemed as well.

At that moment Elohibaluk felt more connected to that wolf than he had ever felt connected to anything or anyone before. “Go wolf” he said in a much softer, friendlier voice, “Go wolf and live”. Elohibaluk met the wolf’s eyes again and felt they were saying the same thing, For one long moment they stared at each other like this and then the wolf lowered his head, as if to bow, turned and walked away slowly. As if nothing had happened and it did not have a care in the world.
