Portrait Photography: creepy giant statues of children in Prague

in #art6 years ago

Hi there my Steemit friends and followers!

The #portraitphotography contest hosted by @juliank is where I very rarely compete as I simply have just too few photos that would qualify for that category. Today, however, I will make a little exception and try to submit an entry to this contest, although I am sure these photos are anything but your typical portrait shots :)

I am currently on a little trip in Prague, the capital of my homeland Czech Republic, and the city is famous for an abundance of interesting sights and tourist attractions of all kinds. Undoubtedly, extraordinary statues and sculptures of all shapes, sizes and colors are among the most popular things that tourists come to admire in Prague and today, I will show you a few shots of what is often considered the creepiest sculptural artwork found in the Czech metropolis - a series of weird statues known simply as "The Babies".

Created by the famous Czech artist David Cerny, these babies can be found at two locations in Prague - most of them are installed on the Zizkov Lookout Tower and three more are situated right next to the Kampa Museum in the historic center of the city.

Just as if having these giant (3.5 m or 11.5 ft long and 2.6 m or 8.5 ft tall) bronze babies "crawling" on the ground was not creepy enough, the author of this bizarre artwork decided to replace the babies´ faces with bar codes.

These three babies have been scaring visitors of the Kampa Museum since 2008. Yet, people love to take photos with them so it is not easy to take an isolated shot of them as there is always someone standing next to them or even sitting on them. I did my best but you can still see some "unwanted objects" (i. e. parts of real children :D) in the last photo where I tried to capture all tree sculptures together.

I loved the ones at Zizkov tower :)

Now this is a cool capture! :) But I cannot take a shot like this right now as these babies were just removed from the tower for some maintenance. Not sure when they will put them back :)

Its creepy indeed!

In this instance I quite like the "unwanted objects" @phortun. They give a sense of scale.

I'll definitely be looking out for these when I go to Prague. In fact, strangely enough someone asked me to join them in Prague last night. I think it's a bit late to get it sorted now though. Although I might check flights if I have time later. 😁

Oh that would be great, to meet you here in Prague :) Actually, I just met Dan @world-travel-pro here yesterday! We had a great time, he is a cool guy and a true travel-pro! :))

yeah. Dan @world-travel-pro said he was in Prague @phortun and we did discuss my coming out as I've been looking for a trip away. But it was a bit short notice I think, as I have to be back here by Friday.

However, Prague is definitely on my list and it would be lovely to meet you there. Maybe I'll look for later in the year. Are you planning on going away at all?

I was here for just a couple of days (to visit my sister) and I am leaving tomorrow but no matter when you come to Prague, I am sure you will love it here! ;)

Oh. That's a shame @phortun. Seems like I missed my moment! 😢

I was living in Prague for three years some time ago but now I only go there to see my sister and some of my friends ;)

Where are you living now then @phortun? And apologies if you've already told me. I find it hard to keep track of everyone here especially those, like yourselves who post pictures from all over the world. 😊

Right now I am back to my Czech hometown of Opava. But even though I love it, I don´t think I will stay here too long :D

Hey, I saw these a few days ago. Or maybe they were different. It was near Prague Castle. All I remember was a baby's butt looking me in the face! lol

Interesting post!

Hey buddy! After what you told me yesterday, I am sure you encountered the very same statues ;) Thank you for hanging around with us yesterday, it was awesome! :) Looking forward to hosting you in my hometown ;)

It was great pleasure to spend some time with you and Tammy. Depending on how things play out ;) I very well may visit you. I've always dreamed of wandering through a forest in Europe and foraging for mushrooms. Is hunting legal? Is that something people do in your home town? That would be a wild experience Phorton and Travel Pro roaming through the woods with guns! lol

Fingers crossed for you Dan, hopefully things will play out the way you want it! ;) If you come to visit me, we will go mushroom picking for sure but no hunting! I love animals, I don´t kill them! ;) Moreover, only professional gamekeepers are allowed to hunt animals in the country (to keep their population under control). Anyway, enjoy this beautiful sunny day in Prague and make sure to take tons of shots :) If you haven´t been there yet, you can go to Vysehrad - one my favorite places in the city ;) Have fun!

I totally get that regarding the hunting bit, also not surprised with the way the laws are. Hunting for mushrooms is plenty good for me. I'm loving the city, but we discussed. "living" in a dorm with 7 other people is starting to really cramp my style. If I don't come visit you, I may just book a flight to Chiang Mai Thailand or Ubud, Bali Indonesia. Way Way Way "pay less get more" Been looking online. Can get my own apartment for as little as 150 dollar a moth there. It's good living. Have you been to either of these places?

Haven´t been to either of them - haven´t been to Asia at all actually :) But I heard these places are definitely what you would call a "pay less get more" destinations :) Let me know what you decide Dan and good luck with that "Lithuanian matter" ;)

Thanks buddy. Will do :)

I'm glad you included a photo with people in it so we can see how large they are. Thanks

Haha, I originally wanted to capture the statues without people but you are right, it does give a sense of scale :) The statues are huge! Thanks for stopping by.

Creepy indeed!

Yay! Thank you guys! :))

Woah these are trippy. The faces are really pretty disturbing with the way they pucker in towards the middle. Yikes!

They are! It is actually very uncomfortable to look in the babies´ "faces" :D Thanks for stopping by ;)
