"How to draw manga" - Part 3

in #art6 years ago

We come to the last part of this first series of tutorials. Today we'll finish our learning of anatomy, and will base ourselves on two concepts: Forms and Dimensions.

The forms will be key because what this type of illustration seeks is to caricature man, and to know the forms of a human being, it is not necessary to know how to read or write, that is why it is the most important thing to generate credibility in the reader.

The dimensions, in turn, are what will allow us to give dynamism to our characters, give us the freedom so that when you stretch your hands in a hit or trying to grab something, the action has the desired impact.

I learned a lot reading this book and my greatest wish is that having shared my process with you, you have also taken out something that is useful to you.

The hands and the feet

How to draw the hands

paso 1.png

The authors note that 1. the standard size of the hand is sufficient to cover the face. 2. The length of the arm is equivalent to a head and a half. 3. The length of the forearm with the extended fingers is that of two heads. 4. The length of the foot is similar to the head.

paso 2.png

5 We will start with the back of the hand. 6 Green: This bone is very important to locate the thumb. 7 The thumb is the finger that has more freedom of movement. 8 You have to pay attention to the outline of the open hand. There is always a space between the fingers

paso 3.png

9 From the drawing above, the knuckle of the thumb is drawn. 10 If you look in profile, you can sense the knuckles of the index finger and the middle finger. 11 If you look from the outside, you can see how the knuckles protrude. 12 The line is slightly curved.

paso 4.png

The hand should always be considered from a 3D perspective -13,14-. It is better to also draw the fingers that are covered -15-. It must be taken into account that the bones of the fingers come from the wrist -16-.

paso 5.png

paso 6.png

The hands change completely according to the position of the wrist and the angle. The movement of the wrist is important -19-

How to draw the feet

paso 7.png

The feet, like the hands, can be drawn with the blocks method. 23, 24.

paso 8.png

One way to represent the feet is to imagine that the ankle is a sphere and the heel another. Then the other parts are added -27-. Green: Arc, Red: Parts that protrude -28-. It will be easier to draw a plan of the foot where the plant is seen if we imagine that the instep area is a shoe -30-.

The shadows in manga

In the manga, two types of shadows are used.

paso 9.png

One is the result of sunlight -31-. The other serves to give the 3D effect to the drawing -32-. The best would be to use a combination of both -33-.

It is important to take into account the origin of the light when drawing any object that projects shadow, otherwise the effect will not be well achieved.

Final comments

As I told you at the beginning, it was very satisfying for me to have done this tutorial, it meant a great personal learning and I wanted to illustrate the techniques of this style, applying everything I was incorporating into the process.

I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and that you join me in future entries.

Read the previous parts: Part 1 Part 2

Sort:

All those HF20 issues threw me off, and in the end, I missed the deadline to upvote the part 2 post. I've read it, though, and read part 3 now. Both parts are quite interesting (and those measurements are fun :P ).

Hahaha, yes, I know, right? I think they are some quick tips to notice if your arms are going to be too large or small, maybe the one about feet can be tested by a yoga teacher hahaha.

This was the last part of this series but I'm already looking forward to start a new one. It should be soon.

I'm always glad to read your comments, thank you!

Nice draw thanks for share.

Thank you for stopping by.

👍👍 🎃
Good intentioned content
But is always best to use real references, even if it is for cartoon 😉

It could be but if you want to draw an entire comic book (manga) you need to manage your time, and looking for references or taking pictures takes a loong time, considering 9 scenes per page.
