Mark Rothko (September 25, 1903 – February 25, 1970)

Mark Rothko's painting evolved from a more realistic mode in the 1930's to the monumental fields of color he is well-known for. The first signs of this new style were emerging in the early 1940's. He is said to have been influenced by the international Surrealist movement. In 1947 he reduces all recognizable forms or lines and dedicates him to large color plates, very rich in color, but often monochrome, high in key.

He thought of his paintings as dramas and as the canvas was obviously the stage and the shapes were performers. They were created for the need for a group of actors who were able to move dramatically without embarrassment and execute actions and gestures without shame, said Rothko in an article in 1947. The unknown story in unknown time and space. Neither the action nor the actors could be anticipated or described in advance.

Once he said that the most important tool an artist should fashion through constant practice is the faith in his ability to produce miracles when needed. „He thought that pictures must be miraculous, it must be a revelation for an artist and a viewer, unexpected resolution of an eternally familiar need.“ Once the painting is finished, he thought, that the intimacy between the creation and the creator is ended.

For me, it's always a great emotional experience to look at Rothko's paintings as these monumental and large fields of color speak to me with no words, or concrete messages. In his paintings everyone could find their own meaning and their own emotion that depending on ability and capacity to feel an artwork. Colors are vibrations so consequently they are emotions as well, they make us feel something inside when we look at them. What is inside the viewer could be equally important as the feeling Rothko had when he made his art, as the meaning that were intended in the specific time of making the painting is not all there is, as each individual brings his own life story before the large canvas ready to feel something.

I hope you enjoy reading this.
Stay well.
