The Story Of Art: Leonardo's Adoration Of The Magi

in #art5 years ago

Between 1481-1482, Da Vinci worked on this piece but was never able to finish it because he left Florence for Milan. The Adoration Of The Magi was a common subject among 15th century Florence. The painting represents an era of Christianity that was born to the world with the arrival of Jesus and the triumph over Pagan values. In the middle, Virgin Mary sits with her child as she is surrounded by three obedient kings. Unruly figures stand and lay behind them along with a crumbling structure in the background. The building is said to be the Basilica of Maxentius which according to a medieval legend, fell on the night of Christ's birth. This painting has been in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence since 1670.
