My Original Sketch: The Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine, Roman Forum, Rome.

There is this huge structure at the northern edge of the forum, near to the Amphitheatre, This building was started by the emperor Maxentius in 308, who was defeated by Constantine at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, and the building was then completed in 312 by Constantine. That is why the building bears such a long name today.

The building has central nave with 3 large vaults on each side resting on four large piers, rising to almost 40 meter high. Only the northern vaults remain today, the central nave and the south vaults were destroyed. The huge colossal statue of Constantine was originally placed at the west end of the central nave, partial remains of the statue is now in a courtyard of the Palazzo dei Conservatori.

The term Basilica is initially a building type, rectangular in plan, which was later used as the basic plan for a church building. So this basilica here is not a church but a public building for many various functions for a large number of the citizen participation.
