The weed I want to show you today has an extraordinary taste. It varies in different stages of the plant age and can come very close to garlic, that is why the plant has got this name. It may also taste a bit like onions. The seeds can be used as a wild pepper.
Where and when can I find it?
Hedge Garlic is a native to Europe but it has meanwhile spread to Asia and Northamerica. You can find it a lot out in nature and its favorite spots to grow are fallow land, garden margins, deciduous forests, hedgerows and sites with nitrogen-rich soil. It is one of the earliest plants to arrive in the new year. At the beginning the leaves look rather round, when the plants grows bigger the leaves get the typical tapering shape. Once you know it you will easily identify it also by the taste.
What kind of plantcompounds does it contain?
The peppery-garlic leaves are rich in provitamin A and contain a lot of Vitamin C. Other substances included are saponins, garlic oil, essential oil, mustard oil glycosides, and blood pressure regulating glycosides
When does it make sense to use Hedge Garlic as a medicine?
If you suffer from one of the following discomforts you can support your healing with Hedge Garlic:
- cough & cold
- wound healing
- rheumatism
- gout
- inflammation of the mouth and throat
- gingivitis
- indigestion
