VISITING THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF INDONESIA [Bilingual]

National Gallery of Indonesia is a state cultural institution whose building serves as a place for exhibitions, and Indonesian and foreign art events. This building is an institution owned by the government under the Minister of Education and Culture.

Before officially becoming the National Gallery of Indonesia, in 1900 the Carpentier Alting Stitching (CAS) Christian Foundation built a school along with a special dormitory for women which was the first school in the Dutch East Indies. Until 1955, the Indonesian government banned all activities of the Dutch community which resulted in the transfer of buildings belonging to the Raden Saleh Foundation, although still under the Dutch movement named Vijmetselaren Lorge. However, a total dismissal was made in 1962 on the highest order of President Sukarno so that the Raden Saleh Foundation was dissolved and all equipment was handed over to the Minister of Education and Culture.

From here is the embryo of a national gallery pioneered with the initial name of the National Art House / National Cultural Development Center. Prof. Dr. Fuad Hasan as the head of the Minister of Education and Culture redesigned the building into the Building of the Arts Exhibition of the Ministry of Education in 1987. The struggle for the development and change of name into the new National Gallery of Indonesia championed by Prof. Edi Sedyawati since 1995 which was finally approved by the Coordinating Minister for Development and Utilization of the State Apparatus in 1998. During its management, the National Gallery was managed by the Minister of Culture and Tourism and then moved to the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Incidentally while visiting the National Gallery, a Collaboration Exhibition was held between Goenawan Mohamad and Hanafi. This exhibition is titled "57 x 76" Collaboration.

Goenawan Mohamad, founder of TEMPO Magazine and generally known as one of the best contemporary writer and essayist in Indonesia, began exhibiting his first sketch with the title "PE.TIK.AN" (means: EXCERPT) in Pelataran Djoko Pekik, Bantul, Yogyakarta (November 2016). Then followed by the "Kata, Gambar" (means: “Word, Picture”), Single Exhibition at Dia.Lo.Gue Artspace, Jakarta (February 2017), "Another Stage" at Pacific Place Script (July 2017), and followed by the next "Centered" at Sarang Gallery (November 2017).

From the exhibition at this Sarang Gallery, Goenawan was invited by Hanafi artists to collaborate.

Hanafi Muhammad formally studied art in SSRI Yogyakarta in 1976-1979. He was among the Top 10 Phillip Morris Awards of 1997. Since 1992, he has more than 100 times performing solo and joint exhibitions, both at home and abroad. Some exhibitions with him are held in the grand event such as Jakarta Biennale, Jogja Biennale, Art Jog, Manifesto, etc. Some solo exhibitions such as The Maritime Spice Road (USA, 2017), Boundless Voyage (Sin Sin Fine Art, Hong Kong, 2017), Java Oxygen (Soemardja Gallery, ITB Bandung, 2015), At Age Fifty (Komaneka Fine Art Gallery, 2010), Darkness (Taksu Singapore and Cream, 2007), Home of Images (Museum de Art of Girona, Spain 2007), Study for Distance (One 2 One Gallery, Canada, 2001), Som Ni de Miro (Mares del Sur, Barcelona, 1999).

The 57 x 76 collaboration with Goenawan Mohamad is a collaboration different from previous collaborations. This collaboration has been prepared ahead of time, with different and growing methods, and demonstrates a dynamic creation of unique artworks. Since the beginning of his career, Hanafi has done many collaborations, not only with fellow artists, but also with interdisciplinary artists, such as writers, musicians, and performing artists. The collaboration also took the form of assistance in the promotion of arts and culture organized by his nonprofit, Studiohanafi, either by coming to various regions or holding residencies in Studiohanafi (Depok). Hanafi Muhammad and his team now develop Papers Gallery in an attempt to extend the creation of art through paper and regeneration of artists using paper, either as a medium, material, or any mode of creation.

Berkunjung ke Galeri Nasional Indonesia

Galeri Nasional Indonesia adalah institusi budaya negara yang fungsi utamanya adalah sebagai tempat pameran, dan acara seni Indonesia dan asing. Institusi ini dimiliki oleh pemerintah di bawah Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan.

Sebelum resmi menjadi Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Carpentier Alting Stitching (CAS) Christian Foundation membangun sekolah pada pada tahun 1900 dengan asrama khusus untuk wanita, yang merupakan sekolah pertama di Hindia Belanda. Hingga tahun 1955, pemerintah Indonesia melarang semua kegiatan masyarakat Belanda yang mengakibatkan pengalihan bangunan milik Yayasan Raden Saleh (YRS), meskipun masih di bawah gerakan Belanda bernama Vijmetselaren Lorge. Namun, pada tahun 1962, perombakan total dilakukan atas perintah tertinggi Presiden Soekarno sehingga YRS dibubarkan dan semua perlengkapan serta peralatannya diserahkan kepada Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan.

Inilah cikal bakal Galeri Nasional Indonesia yang awalnya dirintis nama National Art House / National Cultural Development Centre. Perjuangan untuk pengembangan dan pergantian nama menjadi Galeri Nasional Indonesia yang baru diperjuangkan oleh Prof. Edi Sedyawati sejak tahun 1995. Pada akhirnya, pada tahun 1998, upaya ini disetujui oleh Menteri Koordinator Pembangunan dan Pemanfaatan Aparatur Negara. Kini Galeri Nasional dikelola oleh Menteri Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata dan kemudian dipindahkan ke Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan.

Kebetulan saat mengunjungi Galeri Nasional, sedang dilangsungkan sebuah Pameran Kolaborasi antara Goenawan Mohamad dan Hanafi. Pamerian ini diberi judul “57 x 76”.

Goenawan Mohamad, salah satu pendiri Majalah TEMPO dan lebih dikenal sebagai sastrawan dan esais, mulai memamerkan sketsa perdananya dengan judul “PE.TIK.AN” di Pelataran Djoko Pekik, Bantul, Yogyakarta (November 2016). Kemudian dilanjutkan dengan Pameran Tunggal “Kata, Gambar” di dia.lo.gue artspace, Jakarta (Februari 2017), “Another Stage” di Aksara Pacific Place (Juli 2017), dan disusul pameran selanjutnya dengan tema “Ke Tengah” di Galeri Sarang (November 2017).

Dari pameran di Galeri Sarang inilah, Goenawan diajak oleh perupa Hanafi untuk berkolaborasi. Di tahun 2018 ini, Goenawan akan berpameran di Store Faber Castell Plaza Senayan-Jakarta, Museum OHD-Magelang, dan Galeri Semarang.

Sambil melukis, ia menerbitkan buku Si Majenun dan Sayid Hamid, dan buku puisi Fragmen. Sedangkan lakon terakhir yang ditulisnya berjudul Amangkurat, Amangkurat. Selain itu, sejumlah bukunya yang telah terbit, antara lain, 12 Jilid buku Catatan Pinggir. Hingga ia sekarang masih terus menulis Catatan Pinggir yang dimuat di Majalah Berita Mingguan TEMPO.

Hanafi Muhammad secara formal belajar seni rupa di SSRI Yogyakarta tahun 1976-1979. Ia termasuk Top 10 Phillip Morris Award tahun 1997. Sejak 1992, ia telah lebih dari 100 kali melakukan pameran tunggal dan bersama, baik di dalam ataupun luar negeri. Beberapa pameran bersamanya diselenggarakan dalam perhelatan akbar seperti di Jakarta Biennale, Jogja Biennale, Art Jog, Manifesto, dll. Kolaborasi 57 x 76 bersama Goenawan Mohamad merupakan kolaborasi yang berbeda dari kolaborasi sebelumnya. Kolaborasi ini telah dipersiapkan jauh-jauh hari, dengan metode yang berbeda dan terus berkembang, dan menunjukkan suatu dinamika penciptaan karya seni yang unik. Sejak awal kariernya, Hanafi telah melakukan banyak kolaborasi, tak hanya dengan sesama perupa, melainkan juga dengan seniman lintas disiplin, seperti sastrawan, musisi, serta seniman pertunjukan. Kolaborasi itu juga berbentuk pendampingan dalam hal pemajuan seni-budaya yang diselenggarakan oleh lembaga nirlaba miliknya, yakni Studiohanafi, baik dengan cara datang ke berbagai daerah atau mengadakan residensi di Studiohanafi (Depok). Kini Hanafi Muhammad dan tim kerjanya mengembangkan galerikertas sebagai usaha untuk memperpanjang penciptaan karya seni melalui kertas dan regenerasi seniman yang menggunakan kertas, baik sebagai medium, material, atau modus penciptaan apa pun.
