The Goliath birdwing - Digital Illustration with process shots.

I love butterflies, i find them beautiful, calm and fascinating creatures.
They always seem to me like they are on a mission to live fully and enjoy life.
The concept of metamorphosis has always been a point of interest in my own life, to change from one shape to another, to evolve, to move from ground to sky and to be able to open your wings and fly, i find this transformation epic in its physical and metaphysical form.

Here are some cool facts about this fantastic creature:
Goliath birdwing also known as the Ornithoptera goliath found in New Guinea. It is the second largest butterfly in the world, after the Queen Alexandra's birdwing. Ornithoptera goliath is black. It has green and golden areas on the wings. The females are brown and have some white spots. They are significant-larger than the males.

Process:

1. I love to start with a sweet background to kick things off. I use paper with ink and tea marks i made myself, i crush the paper to give it an old book feel and then scan it, it make such a nice background.

1. Splashing some delicious pink purple large brush stroke to pimp the background and giving a nice kick start to work on.

1. Pumping a little more paint splatter from home made drips and drops brushes i made in photoshop and starting to pump bright colors to fill in the butterfly.

1. Time to pump some blacks to fill the body and give the butterfly some structure buzz.

1. Lets bring in some outlines to give a clear shape to this beautiful creature.

1. Pumping some more ink splatter and black dots details inside the butterfly to give an interesting look.

1. Give the butterfly and second color layer to brighten up the day and adding a few more splatters and ink to make it look fresh and vibrant.

1. Time to boost colors and sharpen the center piece and give a little vintage buzz.

1. POW! even dou the last step was great enough for finish piece i decided to go nuts a little with the color process to give it a more poppy vibrate feel.
