The artist I admire. How did the artist Edward Hopper paint his artworks?

in #artzone5 years ago (edited)

Edward Hopper is one of the most extraordinary figures in the world of American art. This is the poet of loneliness, the narrator of his stories, which very often turn out to be sad and gloomy.

Nighthawks,Edward Hopper

This is an artist with a difficult fate and a strange life. Despite the fact that Edward loved drawing since childhood and received a decent artistic education at the art school in New York, his work was not always understandable to society and recognizable.
Edward had a hard time showing himself to the world. Shy, soft and quiet by nature, he did not enjoy success with his fellow artists and the opposite sex before meeting his only wife.

His first exhibition took place when the artist was already 37 years old and even then his paintings went unnoticed. Glory came to the artist much later.

Self-Portrait,Edward Hopper

The main feature of the work of this artist was the invention of his own style. This is the so-called "portrait of the house."

For this, the artist traveled frequently and his main source of inspiration was empty motorways and streets of provincial cities.

Early Sunday Morning,Edward Hopper

The artist often wrote lonely forgotten buildings. They were surrounded by urban landscapes, but the colors and the way the artist built the composition sometimes made it clear that these landscapes seemed to be devoid of any life and people.

But there was more.

These are the people in his paintings. Often lonely figures, often women who resembled his wife so much. Each such picture had its own history, and the composition was built in such a way that it seemed to the viewer as if he was watching over these people. From the window, from the street behind the glass cafe, from the corner. Every picture had an amazing feeling of intimacy.

When words came to him and many people wanted to understand the hidden meaning of his works. His paintings are still called eerie, filled with hopelessness and reminiscent of the era of the Great Depression.

However, the artist himself was little involved in all this.During his 85 years of life, he always kept silent on all comments.
Many wanted to understand what the lonely woman in the hotel room symbolizes, but the artist always answered briefly: "I wanted to show how the light falls on the walls and objects in the room."

In my opinion, Edward Hopper was so eager to distance himself from people and was so closed that for many lovers of his art he still remains a mysterious figure. At first glance, nothing happens on the paintings of this artist, but one has only to look more closely at how one can see the whole story. From picture to picture, this story is always different.

I don't follow that much art, but Hopper's someone whose work I recognize immediately (especially Nighthawks, which must have been used in some class I took, probably graphic design stuff in high-school). It's great stuff, and I love the vibrancy, so seeing it again was very welcome. Thanks for writing about him, you really taught me some stuff I didn't know.

I am glad that you share my feelings and that my publication has been useful for you) I also always find out the work of this artist, he has a unique style, like Andrew Wyeth (by the way, I will write about him later). I want to look at them for a long time, I feel an amazing mixed feeling, a feeling of comfort and anxiety.

Fascinating. It seems every artist is motivated by such different things, such a privilege to see. Thank you again!!

I want to believe that such a privilege to see every person is worthy. I think that it is enough for this to be open to this world, to everything that is inside it. Then it is easier to see all the changes, every movement. Then the shadow on the wall of the house will look great)
