The Symbolism of Mars

Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun in our Solar System, is named for the Roman god of war ... and agriculture. At first glance it’s an odd combination -- until you notice how both occupations take physical work, physical energy and an attitude of determined aggression.

Mars in Astrology draws on all those qualities ... and takes the metaphysical student on some interesting side-roads as well. There’s always an element of struggle and conflict or competition involved with Mars energy, an undercurrent of life-and-death concerns in the tasks it takes on and its manner.

Mars is a personal planet.

Mars is a personal player in your constellation of Inner Selves, the last of the personal planets. The other four personal planets are The Sun, The Moon, Mercury and Venus. These planets move quickly. They set off events and experiences.

They may deliver serious messages, but more like epiphanies than the drawn-out, protracted work of the Karmic planets which deal in life lessons, slow building and semi-permanent results.

Mars energy represents physical force and power. It shows how you do work and accomplish your goals. It shows how you assert yourself, how you defend yourself, how you express desire ... and anger. It lights your inner fires, provides motivation and gets you going.

Mars in a horoscope

Mars reveals your initiative, your ability to set goals and achieve them. Its sign position tells what interests you enough to take action, what you’re willing to work for -- or fight for -- and the personal traits you use to get things done ... or set things in motion.

The house in your Natal Chart which contains Mars shows a place where action happens, the concerns that drive your desires and the life issues you work to build. It shows where you invest your physical energy. Everything in life that takes action from you originates there.

Mars in Masculine Signs

Mars in a Fire Sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) wants conquest and personal glory. A person with this energy blend acts to compete, to win, to prove something, to “come out on top.” He wants attention. He is self-motivating and wants something like fame, admiration or applause.

He is candid and direct and makes no bones about what he’s after. He may be personally touchy -- especially about things reflect somehow on him, and he resorts to temper if he feels slighted or dissed. Mars in Fire is known for his passion. And if he’s not happy, everybody knows about it -- and no one is left wondering why.

Mars in an Air Sign (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) pursues ideas and is interested in collecting information and knowledge. A person with this energy blend is a thinker, a strategizer, a planner ... a visionary. He works to learn things -- and teach things to others. He shares what he knows and is constantly on the trail of more data.

He is proud of his beliefs and opinions. He defends his ideas. He loves constructing concepts and theories. His take on the world is objective and intellectual. He’s doesn’t get angry “for personal reasons,” but he loves a spirited debate -- and may lose patience with flawed arguments or people who don’t know what they’re talking about.

Mars in Feminine Signs

Mars in an Earth Sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) is interested in the actual building and construction of things. It concentrates on practical achievements. A person with this energy blend works to assemble something solid from physical materials. He collects possessions and assets, and invents or creates helpful tools or useful devices. He wants something to show for his labor and time.

He’s not as active or quick as Mars in a Masculine Sign. He likes to plan and strategize and make the most of his talent and materials. Finding the best way (as opposed to the fastest way or the flashiest way) to achieve his ambitions appeals to his pragmatic, conservative nature. He get the job done, but he does it his way and he takes his time doing it. Keep that in mind.

Mars in a Water Sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) acts from emotions and feelings. He is moved by things that matter to him -- his loved ones, his security, his desire to improve life, his desire to distill meaning from experience. This person may be a mystery to the other Mars combinations. He is inspired by abstractions, symbolism, ideals ... and dreams.

He may be one of the hardest souls to understand, because what “moves” him may not be obvious. Deep-seated urges, psychological issues, survival instincts, power plays and connection to Spirit or “matters greater than himself” figure strongly in why he acts as he does, but it takes profound understanding -- and lots of interpretation. Even he may not fathom it (or be able to explain it) himself.

Thank you for stopping by!

If you've always known there was more to Astrology than Sun Sign material and the three line daily horoscope in the newspaper, climb aboard and follow this blog. You'll find a world of wisdom detailing how you were designed to work with life ... and why you are the way you are -- all in quick-to-read, easy-to-digest-and-remember, written-in-plain-English essays that offer plenty of food for thought.

Little by little, I'm doing a set of articles that talks about all the elements in your horoscope and what they have to say about you. If you "know something" about Astrology -- or know something about your chart placements, that will help you get more from this material.

If you don't ... well, this is one place you can learn. We all have to start somewhere ... because we aren't born knowing this stuff. Meanwhile, if you've never seen your horoscope ... and don't have a clue how to work with it, maybe it's time to find out. There are lots of "chart services" on the internet -- some of whom produce decent, readable charts "for free" and some are so awful and confusing that even I can't read them easily -- and I've worked with charts for decades.

One extremely user-friendly chart site is here: AstroLabe. I recommend them if you want a simple, easy-to-read chart. I think they even give a reasonable little interpretive reading of your horoscope as part of the package. You'll need to know your birth information -- day, month, year, time and geographical place. Without all that your chart will have limited accuracy.

Or, if you want to get serious and really talk about this, upvote this post and start a conversation in the comments section sometime in the next six days from the time of publication. We'll go from there depending on what you want to know.

Questions about any of this? -- Upvote this post and talk to me in comments. It's a terrific way to build value for yourself and the community ... and it will give me ideas of what to write about in future posts. Believe me there is lots to say about the way The Sun, The Moon -- and all the other elements in a horoscope, all the other components of Astrology -- work together to interpret you and your story -- and what it all means to the person you've become.

This is who I am.

About the art in our visual essays ...

Although sometimes the background pictures in our visual essays support the topic and text, they don't always. Sometimes the connection is clear. Sometimes it's symbolic and subtle. Sometimes, there's no connection at all.

The scenes depict landscapes and natural features, buildings and wildlife. They were chosen because they show something lovely or interesting ... or simply because the photo appealed to me.

Our spectacular and remarkable planet is changing at astonishing speed. Rarely are these changes for the better. Few people seem to know ... or care ... or have the will and power to do anything about this. It may not be long before the world humans have known and lived in for centuries is forever lost. We certainly won't be able to make repairs as fast as we destroyed it.

So a few years ago I began collecting pictures of the way things were ... and still are for now, a record of the beauty we have while it is still ours to love and honor.

The photos here are part of that collection, with sincere thanks to the artists who saw these moments ... and with their cameras ... preserved them. All of us at Enchanted Spirit are profoundly grateful to them for their generosity and skill ... and for the added grace, depth and dimension their art brings to ours.
