Mars -- retrograde in Aquarius

Mars has turned retrograde in Aquarius. This happened on June 26 and its effects will be showing up soon. I see them at work already in my life. (And if you know what to look for, you'll see them in yours.) Mars is retrograde until August 27 ... but its retrograde effects will linger until around mid-October. This means something special about how you'll work with and experience life during this time.

Mars goes retrograde roughly once every two years and stays that way for about two and a half months each time. Mars retrograde marks a time when all the things ruled by or involved with what Mars represents in Astrology are up for review, revision -- and usually some major course correction.

You can learn more about the general meaning of retrograde motion here ... and here. Go back if you like when you've finished this article and pick up those links. You don't really need them to understand what I have to say in this post.

What this means in general

Briefly, retrograde energy shows a time of reworking, refocusing, redoing, rebuilding, reconsidering -- going back again into the structures of one's life and creating something new, or at least something different -- according to what the planet itself symbolizes. So hold onto the thought that retrograde periods are about revising things that already exist -- and let's talk about Mars.

Mars represents physical action. It deals with actual work, ambition, initiative, assertion, and in its less attractive expressions, aggression, brute force, and violence. It represents your ability to take action and to set things in motion, to move forward to achieve your desired results. Mars also represents desire and sexual energy, the kind of love you express and the ways you seek love for yourself.

Mars means action

Mars describes your ability to be direct, forceful and forthright, to be independent and pioneering, to pursue your ambitions -- and take vigorous action to get what you want. Mars energy is impulsive, determined, driven, competitive and enthusiastic.

Mars energy represents the kind of desire and enterprise that wants to move forward now!! So retrograde motion is not comfortable for this very assertive, vigorous and impatient energy that wants to get things done immediately -- because Mars retrograde energy is literally devoted to doing work over again.

Part of creation is editing and revising

However, part of the creative process is to pause, look back, rebuild what wasn't done right the first time, fortify what needs to be stronger, and to solidify the results of past action so that future progress has more substantial foundations.

Mars retrograde energy can also be the constructive results of "learning from experience." A lot of pioneering initiative and creative effort benefits enormously from the wisdom of hindsight.

Having done something once already, prepares you to do it the second (or third or fourth) time more efficiently, knowing where the potholes in the road were located last time, knowing how to avoid previous mistakes, knowing how to streamline the process as a result of your prior practice.

Taking another run at things

In short, you know how to move faster and get where you're going sooner -- with fewer stumbles and false steps to slow you down than happened when the path was strange, untraveled and unmapped, the first time through.

However much you may agree that "doing things over" in certain life areas is necessary, even advantageous -- there is still an unavoidable anger, frustration, impatience, restlessness and even resentment that accompanies this time.

People are more on edge, a little pushier (for all the good that does!!) -- and may chafe more openly at feeling stalled, blocked, hemmed in, limited and held back.

Doing things over instead of starting anew

Obviously, for those who see these connections quickly, Mars retrograde is not the time blaze new trails and mark new territory. In fact, don't expect much new progress on anything during Mars retrograde.

What is created at this time (and especially whatever is newly created) will also have to be redone eventually> This is a time of shoring up, of finding other paths to follow, of finding even indirect -- or previously unrecognized and disregarded avenues of approach -- for achieving the ambitions and results you want.

In fact, as you come to recognize the life patterns astrology describes with its cosmic symbolism, you will see you're really going back to claim something you already know about. Or something you are working toward that has assumed more relevance and standing than you originally saw. Or something you have been trying to achieve is taking more time and more work than you planned. Or work you've done so far isn't enough for the load it will have to carry.

Digging in ... doing it right

Some combination of all this will be right onstage in the life areas where Mars and its retrograde energy are traveling now.

When Mars is retrograde, you will reconstruct certain life areas that need more solidity and groundwork.

So, instead of about 2 months of work ... which is the case when Mars is direct, you will get more than 6 months of concentration in the affected sector as Mars backs up ... and moves forward again -- with new structures, plans and ambitions in place.

These will be more efficient and substantial than when all this renovation started.

See everything now as a trial run, a rough draft

See all new projects begun now as "rough drafts" of what you'll eventually need. Give yourself time, patience, latitude and scheduling comfort.

It's not a good idea to move into a new house, a new city, take a new job, or start some important long-term project under Mars retrograde, without understanding that it is a very temporary situation -- and plan accordingly. It will eventually be more of a false start or premature effort than anything dependable. You'll learn from it ... and choose more wisely next time.

What you're doing now will change substantially, before it's done.

Everyone is more temperamental

Ambitions are changing. Expect new possibilities and opportunities to arise. Realize that tempers flare faster and anger is more evident. Take that into account, too.

The more dangerous side of this is to repress anger and resentment, hoping "things will get better in while." This can become an extremely destructive tactic if you are not dealing honestly with yourself and your feelings.

Handle with care

Mars retrograde is a time when you redirect efforts and choose modified goals. You may reverse and change choices made (and "work done") in the last 2 years. With all the impatience afoot -- and the repressed aggression and subliminal sexual energy -- do beware of impulsive behavior, sudden aggression or outright rage.

Accidents of all kinds -- especially ones involving serious injury -- are more likely under Mars retrograde. A little extra care and tolerance may save you a lot of discomfort in the long run, if you can manage that kind of calm, temperance and control now.

Thank you for stopping by!

If you've always known there was more to Astrology than Sun Sign material and the three line daily horoscope in the newspaper, climb aboard and follow this blog. You'll find a world of wisdom detailing how you were designed to work with life ... and why you are the way you are -- all in quick-to-read, easy-to-digest-and-remember, written-in-plain-English essays that offer plenty of food for thought.

Little by little, I'm doing a set of articles that talks about all the elements in your horoscope and what they have to say about you. If you "know something" about Astrology -- or know something about your chart placements, that will help you get more from this material.

If you don't ... well, this is one place you can learn. We all have to start somewhere ... because we aren't born knowing this stuff. Meanwhile, if you've never seen your horoscope ... and don't have a clue how to work with it, maybe it's time to find out. There are lots of "chart services" on the internet -- some of whom produce decent, readable charts "for free" and some are so awful and confusing that even I can't read them easily -- and I've worked with charts for decades.

One extremely user-friendly chart site is here: AstroLabe. I recommend them if you want a simple, easy-to-read chart. I think they even give a reasonable little interpretive reading of your horoscope as part of the package. You'll need to know your birth information -- day, month, year, time and geographical place. Without all that your chart will have limited accuracy.

Or, if you want to get serious and really talk about this, upvote this post and start a conversation in the comments section sometime in the next six days from the time of publication. We'll go from there depending on what you want to know.

Questions about any of this? -- Upvote this post and talk to me in comments. It's a terrific way to build value for yourself and the community ... and it will give me ideas of what to write about in future posts. Believe me there is lots to say about the way The Sun, The Moon -- and all the other elements in a horoscope, all the other components of Astrology -- work together to interpret you and your story -- and what it all means to the person you've become.

This is who I am.

About the art in our visual essays ...

Although sometimes the background pictures in our visual essays support the topic and text, they don't always. Sometimes the connection is clear. Sometimes it's symbolic and subtle. Sometimes, there's no connection at all.

The scenes depict landscapes and natural features, buildings and wildlife. They were chosen because they show something lovely or interesting ... or simply because the photo appealed to me.

Our spectacular and remarkable planet is changing at astonishing speed. Rarely are these changes for the better. Few people seem to know ... or care ... or have the will and power to do anything about this. It may not be long before the world humans have known and lived in for centuries is forever lost. We certainly won't be able to make repairs as fast as we destroyed it.

So a few years ago I began collecting pictures of the way things were ... and still are for now, a record of the beauty we have while it is still ours to love and honor.

The photos here are part of that collection, with sincere thanks to the artists who saw these moments ... and with their cameras ... preserved them. All of us at Enchanted Spirit are profoundly grateful to them for their generosity and skill ... and for the added grace, depth and dimension their art brings to ours.

You write THE BEST astrology articles. OMG. Seriously. This explains so much of my day. lol! I was so pissed off tonight that I broke my wooden spoon on the cast iron pan after burning the food because kids. I needed to take out my anger somewhere, and the spoon isn't alive and was the most immediate victim, so... I need a new spoon. On the bright side, I considered taking my friend's bike for a ride in Whistler this weekend, had the feeling I was going to end up with road rash, and decided to drive instead. Glad I followed my intuition on that one. I'll be keeping this whole Mars-in-retrograde thing in mind. Thanks for explaining it so well!

I know. I've been known to beat some poor innocent object to smithereens, because if I did that to who I was really mad at, I'd be arrested. Mars Retrograde is also a time to go back in your mind, see if you can make different choices, see if you can do something to change what's making you so angry. (I realize not having kids may not be an option at this point ... but there may be other things you can adjust.)

See if there are ways to intervene in the escalating irritation earlier. See if "more time out" for you might help. See if negotiating some different arrangements with a partner about who watches the kids or who keeps them occupied while you cook, etc., would give you more room to operate calmly.

Sometimes there's no option except a different perspective. And sometimes you just need to break the spoon.

I know that feeling too, though. I remember one time in particular when I was just out for a drive for a few hours. I didn't need to feed anybody. I didn't need to medicate anybody. I didn't have to referee any fights. I didn't have to listen to complaints. I didn't have to pick up trash. I didn't have to clean litterboxes. I didn't have to let the dogs out -- and then let the dogs in.

I could just be alone for a while. It was heaven. See if there's a way to give yourself a gift like that.

Meanwhile ... hugs and sympathy. Those, too, can help.

I actually just came back from my first solo weekend away from the kids. I'm sure part of this is them and me transitioning to me being back. But yes, that time was AMAZING. Even if I had to hike a mountain twice. And now I know Mars is to blame (at least in part) for that. ;)

(I realize not having kids may not be an option at this point ... but there may be other things you can adjust.)

So funny. Not funny, but funny. Actually, while they were eating dinner and finally chilled out, I was looking up recipies and planning food to have on hand so maybe we don't all get hangry again. A combined twin/mommy meltdown isn't a pretty thing. lol!

But it passes. And it was only a spoon. And now I've made healthy cookies, and have a grocery list to get tomorrow, and at least a plan of how I can make things better next time... or at least try.

Hangry is the worst. Even I have to make plans so that doesn't happen.
