Your sense of order

Saturn in your horoscope symbolizes your sense of organization and structure. It give information about how you are designed to work with concepts like boundaries and limits, to “color inside the lines,” to observe protocol and play by the rules. Many people chafe at the very idea of hindering themselves because of things like scarcity or traditional forms or someone else’s stodgy notions of “how things are done.”

For the free spirits, the visionaries, the artists and creative types in the world, it’s easy to chafe against Saturn’s demands and see him as an adversary -- the bane of your existence, gumming up the wheels of progress and crippling you and everything you’re trying to do. Some people make a hobby of hating on Saturn, and I admit the temptation is strong.

Your inner critic

Many old and respected Astrology texts take an unseemly glee in pointing out all the crappy things Saturn brings with him and tosses casually into your life. Saturn was in many ways equated with the misery of the human condition -- custodian of all the problems and challenges we had to accept as part of living on earth.

Mostly when dealing with Saturn there’s never enough of something. Never enough time. Never enough money. Never enough experience or skill. Never enough credit or appreciation. Never enough help.

Hard to like and harder to satisfy

Saturn is the "earthiest" of the planets. To work with him, you have to be grounded ... and practical ... and patient ... and persistent. Saturn is the farthest planet we can see here on earth without the aid of a telescope -- and some of the metaphors that apply to him in Astrology reflect this physical fact.

He once represented the limits of material reality, the farthest possible point we could reach on our own. Even then it took some knowledge, luck, focus and the right sky conditions to succeed in finding Saturn. In life it takes a lot of the same to succeed in satisfying him.

Responsibilities and requirements

Saturn energy deals with commitments, requirements, obligations, responsibilities and essential ingredients. It rules things you absolutely have to do or have in order to reach your goals. When you set ambitions, no matter what they are, there are certain steps you must take, milestones you must reach, changes you must achieve to make this new reality real.

Saturn deals with rules and regulations. It sticks to tried-and-true methods, traditions and habits. Saturn energy is organized, disciplined, concentrated, tenacious. When you're working under its direction, it insists that you be the same. You can see why people feel oppressed and confined when coping with these attitudes. His reputation for being difficult and unpleasant is well-deserved and ok, reasonable.

There is a better way

But there is another way to approach Saturn and his intractible character. You're not going to change him, so you'd better adjust your attitude. Saturn has plenty of virtues ... and some valuable gifts to leave with you. They're just not terribly appealing (or attractive) outside of places like school, the business world, corporate structures, government or the military.

Saturn is one of the best instructors you'll ever have in teaching you how to meet high standards, obey the law, "play the game," observe tradition and respect the chain of command. Saturn makes you earn absolutely every inch of progress you make, every dollar you acquire, ever grudging word of praise and encouragement that comes you way.

He is hard-nosed, hard-assed and one of the harshest, most unforgiving judges the Cosmos can deliver. But if you can appreciate the level of quality he produces ... and see "failure" in his book as motivation to try again, try harder, do things differently and win this time, you may actually make friends with the old curmudgeon. There are worse ways to spend your time.

Thank you for stopping by!

If you've always known there was more to Astrology than Sun Sign material and the three line daily horoscope in the newspaper, climb aboard and follow this blog. You'll find a world of wisdom detailing how you were designed to work with life ... and why you are the way you are -- all in quick-to-read, easy-to-digest-and-remember, written-in-plain-English essays that offer plenty of food for thought.

Little by little, I'm doing a set of articles that talks about all the elements in your horoscope and what they have to say about you. If you "know something" about Astrology -- or know something about your chart placements, that will help you get more from this material.

If you don't ... well, this is one place you can learn. We all have to start somewhere ... because we aren't born knowing this stuff. Meanwhile, if you've never seen your horoscope ... and don't have a clue how to work with it, maybe it's time to find out. There are lots of "chart services" on the internet -- some of whom produce decent, readable charts "for free" and some are so awful and confusing that even I can't read them easily -- and I've worked with charts for decades.

One extremely user-friendly chart site is here: AstroLabe. I recommend them if you want a simple, easy-to-read chart. I think they even give a reasonable little interpretive reading of your horoscope as part of the package. You'll need to know your birth information -- day, month, year, time and geographical place. Without all that your chart will have limited accuracy.

Or, if you want to get serious and really talk about this, upvote this post and start a conversation in the comments section sometime in the next six days from the time of publication. We'll go from there depending on what you want to know.

Questions about any of this? -- Upvote this post and talk to me in comments. It's a terrific way to build value for yourself and the community ... and it will give me ideas of what to write about in future posts. Believe me there is lots to say about the way The Sun, The Moon -- and all the other elements in a horoscope, all the other components of Astrology -- work together to interpret you and your story -- and what it all means to the person you've become.

This is who I am.

About the art in our visual essays ...

Although sometimes the background pictures in our visual essays support the topic and text, they don't always. Sometimes the connection is clear. Sometimes it's symbolic and subtle. Sometimes, there's no connection at all.

The scenes depict landscapes and natural features, buildings and wildlife. They were chosen because they show something lovely or interesting ... or simply because the photo appealed to me.

Our spectacular and remarkable planet is changing at astonishing speed. Rarely are these changes for the better. Few people seem to know ... or care ... or have the will and power to do anything about this. It may not be long before the world humans have known and lived in for centuries is forever lost. We certainly won't be able to make repairs as fast as we destroyed it.

So a few years ago I began collecting pictures of the way things were ... and still are for now, a record of the beauty we have while it is still ours to love and honor.

The photos here are part of that collection, with sincere thanks to the artists who saw these moments ... and with their cameras ... preserved them. All of us at Enchanted Spirit are profoundly grateful to them for their generosity and skill ... and for the added grace, depth and dimension their art brings to ours.
