The Astrology of New Moon Energy

From the time I was small, I thought New Moons were special. That crisp white-edged scimitar of light in the sky ... well, it spoke to me. The idea of the chance to start again, to launch new things, to come at life from another direction and maybe do things differently this time -- it was so appealing.
I had no idea when I was four, five, and six how accurate that view of New Moon energy was. It was just the feeling I got when I looked at it. I didn't even know the word intuition back then. But "feeling?" Yeah, that word, that sensation I knew well.
I loved the perfect round circle of the Full Moon, too, so open and welcoming ... and the night shadows it cast, that turned the familiar world into a mysterious, magical place. Half Moons always looked incomplete. And the shapeless globs of the Gibbous Moon and Disseminating Moon looked crippled and hurt. Dark Moons felt tense and anxious. What if it never showed up again?

So ... time and interest and reading taught me how at least some of those feelings were spot on. Each phase means something different. Each, in its own way, is special. New Moons are a time of beginnings, of energy rising. But they are also an extension of initiatives born in the Dark of the Moon. You almost can't separate one from the other.
Dark Moons / New Moons are a time to rest physically, recuperate emotionally, renew yourself spiritually. Each one of those self-healing acts carries its own payload of power. The world is calling, of course, full of responsibilities, demands and interests. But for a few days a month it's time to shut that out, dim the lights, hear your inner voices, and concentrate on yourself.

That impulse to turn inward and replenish your soul is a survival tactic, part of the skill-set for dealing with life. It's a time to think about where you're going -- as well as where you've been, to take stock of yourself -- and seek guidance from sources wiser than you. The Dark Moon is a time of closure. The New Moon ... a time of beginnings.
Collect yourself and remember who you are in your Dark Moon / New Moon meditations. You'll face the world stronger for it. Use the symbolism of the Moon (feelings, intuition, deep emotions, security concerns, connections to home and family, memories of the past) aligning with the Sun (self-awareness, self-image, personal power and ambition, individual will, core essence) to bring these two halves of yourself together so they're focused and on the same page.

Each New Moon has a theme, drawn from the energy of the sign which the Sun and Moon occupy when they align. Each sign has a theme and set of qualities that define its character. Incorporate the themes of each New Moon experience into the inner work you do to prepare for the coming month. Whether you realize it or not, these will often present themselves to you anyway -- on both conscious and unconscious levels. Acknowledge them openly, make them part of your inner work. This strengthens those personal foundations.
For the New Moon in Cancer (the one happening tonight) -- concentrate on your inner world, your emotions and feelings, listen to and strengthen your intuition -- make it a tool to rely on. Focus on the comfort and appearance of your home and your connections with important family members. Pay attention to memories, well-established traditions (especially family traditions), unresolved issues from the past you may finally need to put to rest once and for all.
Pay attention to security concerns including the integrity and state of your vehicles and your physical dwelling. Do maintenance work. Make repairs. Make sure they can protect you and your loved ones. Listen to safety concerns -- at home and everywhere. Do things to insure that you're not casually at risk, or vulnerable, or "an easy target." Think "safety first" -- and pay attention to any thoughts that come to mind of things you need to tend to. The world is a dangerous place. Make sure you have what you need to live in and move through it safely.

If you don't ... well, this is one place you can learn. We all have to start somewhere ... because we aren't born knowing this stuff. Meanwhile, if you've never seen your horoscope ... and don't have a clue how to work with it, maybe it's time to find out. There are lots of "chart services" on the internet -- some of whom produce decent, readable charts "for free" and some are so awful and confusing that even I can't read them easily -- and I've worked with charts for decades.
One extremely user-friendly chart site is here: AstroLabe. I recommend them if you want a simple, easy-to-read chart. I think they even give a reasonable little interpretive reading of your horoscope as part of the package. You'll need to know your birth information -- day, month, year, time and geographical place. Without all that your chart will have limited accuracy.

Our spectacular and remarkable planet is changing at astonishing speed. Rarely are these changes for the better. Few people seem to know ... or care ... or have the will and power to do anything about this. It may not be long before the world humans have known and lived in for centuries is forever lost. We certainly won't be able to make repairs as fast as we destroyed it.
So a few years ago I began collecting pictures of the way things were ... and still are for now, a record of the beauty we have while it is still ours to love and honor.
