Where it all starts

The Sun. It’s certainly the most famous player in the lore of Astrology. If you know so much as “your sign,” you’re working with the basic but essential information it provides. Granted just knowing your sign is very general and by no means a one-size-fits-all solution to the vast and wonderful mystery of you!

But it’s easy to find -- just by knowing your birthday -- and in the beginning “keeping it easy” may matter. If the first few steps are easy, they may entice you to take a few more ... and a few more after that ... and eventually you’ll realize you’ve tapped into a treasure -- and life itself for you has changed.

If you know “your sign,” you know which of the twelve signs of the Zodiac The Sun was traveling through on the day you were born. Ok, as I said, it’s not much. But it can be intriguing. Best of all it’s a start to mining the incredible treasures of self-awareness and conscious living Astrology can deliver into your life. So, here on a Sunday ... let’s add another Sun-Day chapter to the collected bits about The Sun already present on this blog.

Your horoscope tells the story of you!

The Sun is the symbol for one of the ten well-defined Inner Selves Astrology uses to extract information from a horoscope about the character (and destiny) of the person or event any given chart describes. When an Astrologer interprets your horoscope, he is explaining the substance of what Astrology knows about you based on the star-map of the sky drawn at the moment you were born.

That’s what a horoscope is -- a picture of how you fit into the Grand Scheme of Life, based on when you stepped onto the scene. Your horoscope is not the silly little three-line blurb about your upcoming day used to fill space in the newspaper. Your horoscope is nothing less than the blueprint of your soul. Think about that for a minute. Pretty profound notion, huh?

This is what a horoscope looks like.
It's a star-map of the sky at a fixed moment in time.

The Sun is the only star ...

There’s a double meaning in the subtitle to this article -- that The Sun is the true star of your personal show. The Sun is, in fact, the only real star in your horoscope. This is what “The Sun” looks like to an Astrologer -- the circle with the dot in the center.

... but not the only player on the field.

But you’ll notice, of course, that there are a bunch of other characters and strange symbols and pieces of data, so just as The Sun is not the only occupant in the sky itself, it’s not the only important player in your horoscope -- or in you! The nine other clusters of data come from The Moon -- which is a satellite of Earth and the eight other planets in our solar system.

(I’m not getting into the controversy about Pluto and whether he’s a planet, a dwarf planet, a comet or an anomaly of the Cosmos. Scientists can do what they like with their definitions -- and they will. Astrologers have watched Pluto’s behavior -- and observed the evidence of his symbols -- and we know you don’t mess with him. Someday I’ll start writing about Pluto -- and when that happens, Katie, bar the door!)

The symbol of your essential self ...

So what does The Sun say about you -- and the Inner Self it defines? The Sun represents Your Essential Self, your true being, your fundamental spiritual substance. (Pretty impressive, huh?) Theoretically, it is the strongest element in your horoscope -- and therefore, your personality, but in practice a lot of things can change that. (Just made a note to myself to do a post on this topic someday.)

The Sun describes your basic personality and ego -- the distilled essence of who you are and who you are becoming, captured for this lifetime -- which is less than an instant in the grand time-line of existence -- as it grows stronger, finds new footing and develops inevitably into something and someone else.

You are not the same person you were five years ago, or ten years ago ... and the person you are today won’t exist in the same way five years, ten years from now. But the spiritual fuel of The Sun provides a kind of center -- a cosmic constant -- around which this change and evolution happens. You never stop being an Aries, or a Gemini or a Scorpio. In fact, you’ll become more of that the more experience you have.

... and your unique creative potential

There is enormous creativity and creative potential in your Sun energy. The characteristics of your Sun Sign describe how you’ll go about expressing this, the “style” you have as the artist in charge of your own life. In simple terms your Sun Sign defines the part you play in Life’s Drama -- and the costume and character of the role that defines you.

What you do with it, how you improvise, depends of course on your choices. But there’s always a solid core of character, a timelessness in the perspectives you have, and those are strong enough to withstand a lot of challenge and “experience.” That’s your Sun energy at work, defining you, defending you, and helping you grow.

It’s the immutable statement of who you are and what’s your purpose -- and while some details may change and assume different importance, there’s a comforting constant in knowing who you are and who you will be -- when all’s said and done.

Thank you for stopping by!

If you've always known there was more to Astrology than Sun Sign material and the three line daily horoscope in the newspaper, climb aboard and follow this blog. You'll find a world of wisdom detailing how you were designed to work with life ... and why you are the way you are -- all in quick-to-read, easy-to-digest-and-remember, written-in-plain-English essays that offer plenty of food for thought.

Little by little, I'm doing a set of articles that talks about all the elements in your horoscope and what they have to say about you. If you "know something" about Astrology -- or know something about your chart placements, that will help you get more from this material.

If you don't ... well, this is one place you can learn. We all have to start somewhere ... because we aren't born knowing this stuff. Meanwhile, if you've never seen your horoscope ... and don't have a clue how to work with it, maybe it's time to find out. There are lots of "chart services" on the internet -- some of whom produce decent, readable charts "for free" and some are so awful and confusing that even I can't read them easily -- and I've worked with charts for decades.

One extremely user-friendly chart site is here: AstroLabe. I recommend them if you want a simple, easy-to-read chart. I think they even give a reasonable little interpretive reading of your horoscope as part of the package. You'll need to know your birth information -- day, month, year, time and geographical place. Without all that your chart will have limited accuracy.

Or, if you want to get serious and really talk about this, upvote this post and start a conversation in the comments section sometime in the next six days from the time of publication. We'll go from there depending on what you want to know.

Questions about any of this? -- Upvote this post and talk to me in comments. It's a terrific way to build value for yourself and the community ... and it will give me ideas of what to write about in future posts. Believe me there is lots to say about the way The Sun, The Moon -- and all the other elements in a horoscope, all the other components of Astrology -- work together to interpret you and your story -- and what it all means to the person you've become.

This is who I am.

About the art in our visual essays ...

Although sometimes the background pictures in our visual essays support the topic and text, they don't always. Sometimes the connection is clear. Sometimes it's symbolic and subtle. Sometimes, there's no connection at all.

The scenes depict landscapes and natural features, buildings and wildlife. They were chosen because they show something lovely or interesting ... or simply because the photo appealed to me.

Our spectacular and remarkable planet is changing at astonishing speed. Rarely are these changes for the better. Few people seem to know ... or care ... or have the will and power to do anything about this. It may not be long before the world humans have known and lived in for centuries is forever lost. We certainly won't be able to make repairs as fast as we destroyed it.

So a few years ago I began collecting pictures of the way things were ... and still are for now, a record of the beauty we have while it is still ours to love and honor.

The photos here are part of that collection, with sincere thanks to the artists who saw these moments ... and with their cameras ... preserved them. All of us at Enchanted Spirit are profoundly grateful to them for their generosity and skill ... and for the added grace, depth and dimension their art brings to ours.

very good post

In the twenty-four seconds from the time I published this post until your comment arrived, I don't think you could possibly have read this text well enough to know whether it's any good or not. Frankly, it is -- but you'll do yourself a better service on Steemit if you actually read people's work and comment on something you know or learned or have to contribute to the conversation. Don't just slap a silly "good post" comment on the page and expect any kind of warm reception. Some people will flag you for this. I won't -- this time. But I should. Do yourself a favor. Learn to do better.

I have a question, if horoscope tells us who we are, then why are people so different , you could pick an 100 people and they could be completely different in character even from the supposed horoscope. I don't believe in horoscope, I think it is a silly idea of people not willing to change and adhering to behaviors they believe we're imbibed in them by the stars and sun

What most people think of as a "horoscope" is really only one tiny slice of a much bigger picture. I agree that 100 people born under the same Zodiac sign will be very different people -- each unique and creatively himself. But as I mentioned in this post, there are nine other major elements in a horoscope to consider in revealing a person's (or event's) basic character. And there are at a minimum thirty-three major points of information to combine into a complete horoscope interpretation. Information based on The Sun alone is only one of these.

So to work with the usual "horoscope" information -- based on only your Sun Sign -- is like taking a picture of your foot ... and trying to then tell people "this is what I look like." Of course, it's silly and very misleading -- because it is so woefully incomplete.

I'm not quite sure I understand your last sentence ... but I don't think "the stars" -- or The Sun -- does anything to a person either. I think they symbolize vast cycles of creative energy -- and you are born into these cycles because they so clearly define you -- and offer you opportunities for growth and meaningful experience. It's part of a whole metaphysical philosophy that goes far, far beyond the usual understanding of a horoscope -- such as you read in a newspaper. I agree with you that those are pretty silly and useless.

But when it comes to defining who you are and your place in Life's overall pattern, Astrology offers one of the best guides I have ever found. There is a quote from Henry Ward Beecher that basically sums up the question of how the stars (actually the planets, etc.) can influence a personality -- or vice versa. It states:
"You are not who you are because of when you were born. You were born when you were because you are who you are."
