Mars -- lingering a long time
in Aquarius this year

Mars crossed the Capricorn / Aquarius cusp during the middle of last May. By then, it was already in its own shadow. (This means it had already passed the degree of the Zodiac to which it will return in the present retrograde cycle.) Mars retrogrades in Aquarius this year. In fact, that's happening now.

Mars turned retrograde in Aquarius on June 26 at 9° of the sign. It will journey back for a long, long station at 29° Capricorn and turn direct again on August 27. It will move out of its shadow -- pass the degree at which it turned retrograde -- in mid-October, and finally pass out of Aquarius on November 15.

When it's direct, Mars stays in a sign about 6 weeks. It will be in Aquarius this year for 6 months. Clearly we have a lot of Aquarius-related stuff to do before we move on to whatever comes next. That will make the Leo transits this year "interesting." Leo opposes Aquarius -- and an unhappy Mars is belligerent, irritable and explosive. The Libra transits will be better, though. Libra trines Aquarius.

What Mars means

In Astrology, Mars symbolizes action. It describes the way you use physical energy -- to get things done, to accomplish work, to pursue your desires, to make things happen.

Anything that requires you to move, accomplish work or otherwise physically do something -- to spend energy and invest yourself in the outcome -- is described and ruled, directed and shaped, by the way you use your Mars energy.

What Aquarius means

Aquarius energy is innovative, independent and unpredictable. It is dedicated to trying new things, breaking old habits, inventing new products and solutions that open up options that weren't available before. It is objective and highly original. "The way things have always been done" doesn't impress it at all. This energy is very in touch with new concepts and "things of the future."

Aquarius loves to experiment, believing you can predict results based on theory until you're blue in the face, but you won't know for sure how something will turn out until you actually try it -- and see what happens. It is curious and creative and perpetually open to new ideas and possibilities. It has a terrific imagination, keen intuition and comes up with transformative insights, regularly -- like bolts from the blue.

This is the attitude that's driving the things we want to do now. Where the tried-and-true efforts haven't produced the results we want, it's time to take risks, color outside the lines, think differently -- and create a different, more agreeable future. This energy is restless, defiant -- and will not be told what to do.

It's all meant to help you decide life's big questions at this point. What do you want to do with your life now? What do you want to create? What do you want to experience? Where do you go from here?

Aquarius is visionary. It's not tied to tradition. It acts on inspiration. It is objective and cerebral, but it also is pragmatic enough to believe that "whatever works, works" -- and that a changing world responds best to an open mind and a flexible approach.

The spirit of Mars in Aquarius

The character of Mars in Aquarius is highly active, even agitated -- but also quirky and unpredictable. Here Mars energy is fueled by the most cerebral sign in the Zodiac. There is a lot of intellect, progressive thought and inspired genius behind its behavior, but the behavior itself can be eccentric, erratic and hard to understand.

Mars in Aquarius is motivated by unconventional ideas, and is so independent it's often out-of-step with its contemporaries ... even out-of-step with social norms. This is the primal Warrior Spirit endowed with a grand, humanitarian world view. This energy likes to experiment. It prefers to work with designs and possibilities that are fresh, modern and new. It goes its own way without a second thought ... and blazes paths others can follow.

His prime directive is to improve life in the future -- to create structures and paths for a better world everyone can enjoy. He may passionately champion a whole set of progressive social causes ... as if he can see beyond tomorrow's horizon and help shape the world to come.

What to expect when Mars is in Aquarius

  • When Mars is in Aquarius, actions and attitudes have a progressive, altruistic tone.

  • This energy promotes humanitarian, adventurous, and extremely future-oriented ventures.

  • People are less infatuated with proven methods and old habits than they were when Capricorn energy was in the driver's seat. They are ready to experiment ... to try approaches that are novel, unorthodox, imaginative and versatile. (Make of that what you will.)

  • You may seek useful contacts through group ventures such as clubs, associations, educational classes and seminars, philanthropic organizations, social networks, professional alliances, and activities shared with friends.

  • You want to connect with "like-minded thinkers" ... to gain the power of group unity. Sometimes a show of support from you and a few (or a few thousand) friends can succeed where you ... as a lone voice of virtue crying in the wilderness ... haven't a prayer.

People born with Mars in Aquarius

  • The person with Mars in Aquarius marches to the beat of a very different drummer. He acts according to his own lights and designs -- and doesn't care one bit what others think about what he's doing.

  • He is motivated by things like ideas, theories and concepts. He is attracted by novelty. He likes to take risks. He wants to try something different -- just to learn how to work with it, to find out what will happen, to see how the experience might fit in his personal tool box of "original designs."

  • He is unpredictable and impulsive. He often acts on intuition or some strange inspiration that just "came to him." He doesn't work with tried-and-true methods. (He may not like to read written instructions.) He has his own way of doing things -- and nobody can talk him out of it.

  • His major projects and goals often have some theme of "improving life for everyone" behind them. He lives in the moment but plans for the future. "The past" doesn't have much interest for him -- except at a source of ideas on problems that need to be solved or strategies that have already been tried.

  • Those who love him -- and know him well -- describe him as "one of a kind." Those who don't feel so friendly are apt to call him "just weird." He comes at life from an original angle -- and the things he develops, invents or finds can amount to a parade of tiny miracles ... more than worth the aggravation he causes.

How to work with Mars in Aquarius

  • This is the original think outside the box and then do something about it energy.

  • Listen to your inspiration -- your inner voices. Practice your ingenuity. Hear and heed your original thoughts. If you see a different way to do something -- or different possibilities in a familiar routine or situation, try it out. Important break-throughs arise from such moments.

  • Don't follow the crowd. Don't "ask for permission." Be independent and defiantly yourself!! This energy thrives on originality and innovation. It's a time to blaze new trails, discover new horizons, try out new concepts, and do things your way. When you push that envelope -- and do something you've never done before, you can achieve something you've never done before. In fact, that's the only way something like that happens.

  • Don't be afraid to try something strange and out of character. If it appeals to you -- that's reason enough to think it has merit. Your mind is a source of real genius. The best way to discover -- and make use of -- its treasures is to listen to it when it speaks to you ... and then back it up with initiative and action. In such moments you may redefine yourself and revolutionize the way you work with the world. Seriously. This energy is full of untapped miracles. Mine a few and put them to work.

Thank you for stopping by!

If you've always known there was more to Astrology than Sun Sign material and the three line daily horoscope in the newspaper, climb aboard and follow this blog. You'll find a world of wisdom detailing how you were designed to work with life ... and why you are the way you are -- all in quick-to-read, easy-to-digest-and-remember, written-in-plain-English essays that offer plenty of food for thought.

Little by little, I'm doing a set of articles that talks about all the elements in your horoscope and what they have to say about you. If you "know something" about Astrology -- or know something about your chart placements, that will help you get more from this material.

If you don't ... well, this is one place you can learn. We all have to start somewhere ... because we aren't born knowing this stuff. Meanwhile, if you've never seen your horoscope ... and don't have a clue how to work with it, maybe it's time to find out. There are lots of "chart services" on the internet -- some of whom produce decent, readable charts "for free" and some are so awful and confusing that even I can't read them easily -- and I've worked with charts for decades.

One extremely user-friendly chart site is here: AstroLabe. I recommend them if you want a simple, easy-to-read chart. I think they even give a reasonable little interpretive reading of your horoscope as part of the package. You'll need to know your birth information -- day, month, year, time and geographical place. Without all that your chart will have limited accuracy.

Or, if you want to get serious and really talk about this, upvote this post and start a conversation in the comments section sometime in the next six days from the time of publication. We'll go from there depending on what you want to know.

Questions about any of this? -- Upvote this post and talk to me in comments. It's a terrific way to build value for yourself and the community ... and it will give me ideas of what to write about in future posts. Believe me there is lots to say about the way The Sun, The Moon -- and all the other elements in a horoscope, all the other components of Astrology -- work together to interpret you and your story -- and what it all means to the person you've become.

This is who I am.

About the art in our visual essays ...

Although sometimes the background pictures in our visual essays support the topic and text, they don't always. Sometimes the connection is clear. Sometimes it's symbolic and subtle. Sometimes, there's no connection at all.

The scenes depict landscapes and natural features, buildings and wildlife. They were chosen because they show something lovely or interesting ... or simply because the photo appealed to me.

Our spectacular and remarkable planet is changing at astonishing speed. Rarely are these changes for the better. Few people seem to know ... or care ... or have the will and power to do anything about this. It may not be long before the world humans have known and lived in for centuries is forever lost. We certainly won't be able to make repairs as fast as we destroyed it.

So a few years ago I began collecting pictures of the way things were ... and still are for now, a record of the beauty we have while it is still ours to love and honor.

The photos here are part of that collection, with sincere thanks to the artists who saw these moments ... and with their cameras ... preserved them. All of us at Enchanted Spirit are profoundly grateful to them for their generosity and skill ... and for the added grace, depth and dimension their art brings to ours.

Excellent explanations, @enchantedspirit!

I am personally loving this energy. (Of course, I'm extremely Martian and Saturnian and Plutonian by nature...it's just my chart.)

I have had the energy to organize my thoughts for things I've wanted to initiate but that didn't have the "flow" yet.

Thank you for writing these articles. They explain so much and make me go, "Oh, I'm not crazy, it's just the planets pulling at me and making it seem that way." ;-)
