Gemini Astrology - Gemini In Greek Mythology

in #astrology6 years ago (edited)

Gemini is Latin for "twins." Many astrologists believed that the twins were Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome, but most ancient sources suggested that the original twins were Castor and Pollux.

In classical Greek mythology, the stars in Gemini Constellation were named Castor and Pollux, known collectively as the "Sons of Zeus".

Their mother was Leda, but the twins had different fathers. Castor was the son of Leda's husband, Tyndareus, King of Sparta, so he was human and destined to die. Pollux was the son of the Olympian God Zeus, therefore he was immortal. The legend tells that Zeus transformed into a swan to seduce the lovely Leda and the twins were hatched from an egg.

The twins were known to be well-educated, strong and daring. They were celebrated as healers, physicians and protectors of humankind.

Castor and Pollux were also Argonauts, being among the crew who sailed in the Quest for the Golden Fleece. During that voyage, a fierce storm threatened the mission but went quickly away as a pair of stars appeared over the heads of the twins.

Since that time, many statues and temples were erected to Castor and Pollux and they were often carved as figureheads on ships, as the protectors of sailors.

The legend says that Castor and Pollux fell in love with two beautiful sisters, who were already betrothed to suitors.

According to the myth the twins challenged their rivals in battle and killed them, but unfortunatelly, Castor was mortally wounded in the battle.

Overcome with grief, Pollux wanted to die in order to be with his beloved brother, but since he was immortal, that was impossible.

He went to his father, Zeus, and begged him to let him die and to take away his immortality.

Touched by this strong brotherly love, Zeus accepted and later on placed both their immortal souls together in the sky as Constellation Gemini.

Gemini Horoscope Traits

Ruled by Mercury, the God of communication and messages, Gemini natives love to chat, gossip and change ideas. Gemini sign is called “the butterfly of the Zodiac” because the natives fly from one idea to another, as they are inquisitive, curious and eager to keep themselves informed. They know a little about a lot and very rarely become deeply absorbed into any subject. Unfortunately, they need constant mental stimulation, as they get easily bored.
