Tarakaniv Fort

in #aswcontest6 years ago (edited)

Once again I will tell you about abandoned but still impressive location. I am sure that all my Ukrainian friends are familiar with this object, so my story will be only in English. This is my submission for Abandoned Shit Weekly Contest - №.19 - 'Black & White!' curated by @customnature. I participate just for 2nd time but trust me, it's one of my favorite!

Tarakaniv Fort

Not far from Dubno, just behind the cemetery of the village Tarakaniv there is the abandoned Tarakaniv Fort, once the pinnacle of engineering and military architecture. An officially enclosed object is a hazardous structure, lost in bushes of a toxic Heracleum.

After the last division of Poland at the end of the 18th century, the boundary of the Russian Empire shifted to the west. Dubno became a border town. For almost a hundred years, the Russian administration had thought to build a powerful fort on the western border.

And, after the defeat of the imperial troops in Crimea, the fort near Dubno began to build. The 1890 outpost of stone and concrete was to be built in defense of the railway connecting Lviv and Kiev.

Military engineer Edward Totleben made a new type of project - brick buildings should have been hiding in the depths of the earth. That's how he built the fortress of Kerch.

The fort has rhombus form with sides up to 240 m and a height of 6 m. It is fortified with powerful walls and protected by moats. Imagine that there were up to 800 people in the fort casemates. The Fort was a completely independent military unit. Its area is more than 4 hectares, and it has 7 underground levels. It had a bakery, laundry, church, morgue, telephone and 3 wells with water on his territory, and everything that was necessary for the life of the garrison.

In 1900, the Russian Empire underestimated the potential of the building and left it to its fate. After that, the Tarakaniv Fort was occupied by German, Austrian and Polish troops. In 1915, the leadership decided to return this outpost, and there was a fierce battle fot it, in which most of the fortifications were destroyed and more than 200 Austrian soldiers fell, whose bodies were buried under the cemetery of the Tarakaniv Fort.

On the territory of the fort until nowadays exist traps, so the one who falls into it found out to be in underground pits. That is why moving around this area must be with caution.

As with my previous abandoned object, we've been here 2 times. The good news is that the fortress got a commandant. But it is the only thing it got... No money for restoration ot at least for preserving...

P.S. In the fort were filmed some episodes of movie The Guide (Ukrainian: Поводир, Povodyr), a 2014 Ukrainian drama film.*
