CHILDREN IN A AFTERCARE CENTRE AT SCHOOL.
Most families are not lucky enough to have only one working parent, because the cost of living has become so high.
The parents work long hours and are just as tired when they get home as the children are.
For that reason I think every school should have a aftercare centre as it is very difficult to let the child go home alone in this era we are living in.
The other reason is there are special teachers who do this in the afternoon so that children can do their homework and you as a parent are not worried about your child. But there should be some very good rules for this centre. Remember this child has been at school until at least 2 o’clock in the afternoon.
For that reason each school should have a aftercare centre as it is very difficult to let the child go home alone in this era we are living in. For that reason it is important to let these children play a bit and get a decent meal.
If you want to send an extra lunch box with little things that you know your child love, it will make them feel that you really care. Children must never feel that they are staying there because you do not care.
After eating and having some play time at school, they must do their homework. It is the teacher’s job to see that every child does his or her homework on their own. But that does not mean that they cannot ask for help. Teachers should make sure that all the homework is done neatly, correctly and help when help is needed.
Some children will have extracurricular activities in that case the teacher must see that the child gets to the group where he or she has to be and the person in charge there should make sure that the child is brought back to the aftercare facility, as the parents reckon there children are well looked after. Treat these children as if they were your own at home for they also miss their parents and would like to go home like the other children. Explain to them that their parents care so much that is why they are not letting them stay at home alone.
When parents pick up their children after work, even if they are tired, make a fuss of seeing them and ask them how their day was. It is now so important to have a good conversation with your child and talk about what they did and what you did. They will learn from the way you treat them how important they are to you yet you are just trying to help them be safe because you love them very much. Make sure you spend time with them when you get home, and let them help you with making food or whatever you have to do.
Children are our most wonderful gifts and for that reason read to them when they go to bed and even sit and chat with them for a while. You will have time to do what you want when they sleep. Couples should do this together or take turns as it is so important that children never feel they are not loved or safe.
Always remember that children always follow your example and that is the best way to teach a child good manners and how to be happy. Aftercare units should be there to let children know that it is in their best interest that they go there and for no other reason.
I hope you feel the same as I do because we do not always have a choice. But that does not mean that these children have to feel lost or less loved. If you find out from your child when you have a conversation after school that something is bothering them write a note to the teacher at the aftercare centre, I am sure she will do her best to try and fix it.
