If we remove the empty space in the atoms, all mankind would fit into a sugar cube

The atoms that make up the world around us look solid. However, they actually represent 99.9999% of empty space. An atom consists of a small, dense core surrounded by a cloud of electrons scattered over a proportionately large distance.

The reason is that as particles, electrons behave like waves. They can exist only where the combs of these waves meet correctly.

Rather than exist at one point, the location of each electron is spread over a range of possibilities - orbital. That's why they occupy a lot of space.
