WHERE DID I GET MY ATTITUDE?

in #attitude6 years ago

If your attitude is so important, then you may be asking yourself, where did I get it? Am I stuck with it my whole life- for better or for worse? First, Let's look at the question of where your attitude comes from.

Before answering the above question it is very pertinent that we understand the definitions of attitude and the various concepts attached to it.

Attitude
A settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person's behavior.

In Social Psychology
An attitude is an evaluation of an attitude object, ranging from extremely negative to extremely positive. Most contemporary perspectives on attitudes also permit that people can also be conflicted or ambivalent toward an object by simultaneously holding both positive and negative attitudes toward the same object. This has led to some discussion of whether individual can hold multiple attitudes toward the same object.

An attitude can be as a positive or negative evaluation of people, objects, events, activities, and ideas. It could be concrete, abstract or just about anything in your environment, but there is a debate about precise definitions.

The definitions above tells it all as we will be considering factors that play roles in the moulding of our attitude and where it is coming from. These factors include;

PERSONALITY - WHO YOU ARE
Two men were out fishing. When the fish stopped biting they started to talk. One man praised his wife and extolled her many virtues, summing it up by saying, You know, if all men were like me, they would all want to be married to my wife.
And if they were like me, the other replied, none of them would want to be.

Everybody is different. Each person is born a unique individual. We are all as different as our fingerprints. That is true even of siblings born of the same household. Even twins who are genetically identical have distinct personalities.

Your personality type-- your natural "wiring" impacts your attitude. That is not to say you are trapped by your personality.

ENVIRONMENT -- WHAT'S AROUND YOU
The environment you were exposed to growing up definitely has an impact on your attitude. Did your parents go through a divorce? That may cause you to have a mistrustful attitude towards members of the opposite sex. Did close one to you die? That may prompt you to have an attitude of emotional distancing from others.

It may be hard to predict exactly what will happen to a person's attitude based on his or her early environment, but you can be certain that it made an impact of some kind.
