In Case You Missed It

Injury: Brandon Belt went on the 10 day DL his week to get an appendectomy. Amazingly, he tried to play through the pain and was taken out of Saturday’s game in the third inning. Belt was batting a col .037 with 11 homers and 31 RBIs. He might have even made some MVP candidate lists if his team was in a better position. At least his trip to the DL coincides with Joe Panik coming off the DL. The Giants are definitely having trouble keeping their big-ticket players off the DL. Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija and Joe Panik have been regulars there this year.

Injuries: After spending the first two months of the season shelved on the DL following off-season knee surgery, Dustin Pedroia expected to hit the ground running. Instead, the 2008 MVP made it through three games before heading right back to the DL with knee inflammation. Manager Alex Cora hopes that Pedroia won’t need any longer than the 10 days allotted. Pedroia is getting an evaluation in New York. The hope was that Pedroia’s return would supplement the team’s play and moral as MVP candidate Mookie Betts went on the DL this week. This was not the case. Pedroia went 1 for 11 in his three games played.

Back to the DL: Cy Young candidate Clayton Kershaw only went 62 pitches in his first start since coming of the DL with shoulder stiffness before being placed on the DL once more with a back injury. It’s the same back injury that’s caused multiple week stints on the DL in each of the past 3 years. None of his 20 fastballs throwns against the Phillies in his one start back went above 90 mph. Dennis Santana has been called up to replace him. Kershaw joins nearly the rest of the starting rotation on the DL. Rich Hill, Kenta Maeda, and Hyun-Jin Ryu are all on the DL with various ailments.
