America is unprepared for the "jobs apocalypse" automation will bring

in #basicincome6 years ago (edited)

The future is now and America is not prepared for it.

This according to Axios Editor Steve LeVine.

"The biggest takeaway is that the future is now," LeVine told CBSN in an interview on Friday.

"We're not prepared at all," he said, for the "jobs apocalypse" resulting from automation.

We shy away from the political endorsements but when it comes to the jobs situation, the politicians are not even talking about it. The problem is only compounded by the fact that many want to debate whether this is even going to be a problem. There is a faction out there that believes this time will not be any different.

"You see scores of companies complaining they can't find enough skilled labor...they are not prepared to train new workers. And as a country we have not even started talking about, 'How do we retrain our workforce?'" LeVine said.

At least 10 million U.S. jobs are at high risk of losing out to automation in the next decade as companies replace them with machines, a recent analysis from research firm CB Insights found.

If forecasts like these are correct, what is going to happen when 10 million people cannot find work due to inadequate skills? What will occur if that number is really 15 million?

Failure to discuss this topic can be viewed as a major mistake.

Very nice article. Indeed, this is going to be a worldwide problem with increasing automation. UBI projects like Manna are an exciting way to potentially overcome poverty in the future. Nice work!

It didn't only have up happen in America, it happens here too, even worst, the best job here is be a politician steeling money together . They don't care about people but themselves

Private job owners pays less than what should be paid cos we don't have choice than to do it

Where is "here" for you?

Yep. You said it. There is almost NO discussion in the U.S. about the disappearing jobs situation. And yet there are solutions all ready to launch -- various iterations of universal basic income.

We should be in UBI beta already, working out the kinks, getting ready to go country- (and world-) wide.
